Paula Deen Fired[W:223]

Re: Paula Deen Fired

One trend on FN that I have noticed over the last several years is an obvious attempt by ownership to expand the audience to the minority viewer. They have added several shows with African American or minority hosts and are working hard to change the demographic beyond the white suburban foodie.

I wonder if this played a role in the decision to no longer employ Deen?

Could be. Too bad they couldn't have found someone LESS annoying than the Neelys though.

The Neelys scare the crap out of me. I watched them a few times and swore they were about to rip each other's clothes off and do the nasty in the middle of a vat of BBQ sauce. I will say this -- I went to their restaurant in Memphis, and they had some of the best BBQ I've ever had. And they gave you so much foooooood. OMG. I ordered the pulled pork plate, and it was a huge. I ate part of it, took the rest home and Hubs and I finished the 2nd half for dinner that night. So much food. And their BBQ Nachos are to die for.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

It appears that Ms. Deen's reputation and future have been destroyed by this incident, a result which seems a little out of proportion to the incident, considering that she used a word that many black people use all the time in reference to each other, both in casual conversation and popular songs.

How big a victory and for whom this might be is questionable. Some white employers will now not hire blacks because they will fear the same thing might happen to them if they make a mistake of this nature. Those employers may fear hiring a black person is giving control over their own future to the discretion of that prospective employee, which is what appears to have happened in this case. Other white employers will feel sympathy for Ms. Deen and not hire blacks out of resentment of the huge consequences that befell someone that isn't really an evil or immoral person by any generally accepted traditional standards of immorality or evil.

Certainly no one would endorse her saying what she did, however it is difficult to see that there are any actual winners here now. Everybody is mad and the race relations status quo is even worse.

Right. Your answer is to pretend it never happened, that's how things get better...

Firstly, her testimony was part of a lawsuit of a PATTERN of behavior by Deen and her brother that were discriminatory in the way they ran their business. Which, by the way, racial discrimination and sexual harassment are illegal. Deen is accused of looking the other way when many staff complained about their working conditions. Her losing the show on food network is a just a secondary consequence to how she and her brother conducted themselves as business owners.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

Ray410 might be on to something. If someone wanted to take me through the laundry for saying a word some years ago, I, personally, would avoid them like the plague.

Actually, she is being sued by her WHITE general manager who witnessed the racial discrimination and alleges that she suffered sexual harassment from Deen's brother. She also claims that Deen ignored the problems despite numerous complaints. So I guess that means people should stop hiring white people?

Empie, the big red letters and wild exaggerations are what I'm referring to, not necessarily your viewpoint on the subject. ;)
Okay Chrissy, I'm big-time busted!

I plead guilty to the "big red letters" and throw myself on the mercy of the court_

But! I strongly deny the charge of "wild exaggerations" and demand an acquittal_

btw; what's the harm in a little drama ever now and then?! :neener

You're appealing to a popular reaction to something to establish legitimacy. Which might be the dumbest argument possible. Being that all manner of things may offend the majority, while lacking any real basis for such.

Hell, 20 years ago, the overwhelming majority was offended by homosexuality and atheism.

The word is offensive. That is why people get offended.

Captain, I suggest cracking a book on basic logic. If I called some ignorant redneck or piece of ghetto trash "a Homo sapien" they would likely be offended. But ignorant reactions hardly serve as proof of anything, and obviously context matters

Language is words in context.

Calling people a racial slur is offensive. It really is just that simple.

Always best to wait until the conclusion of a lawsuit before attacking anyone over allegations in the initial pleadings.

Generally, particularly when the defendant has a lot to lose because of public reaction, the plaintiff attorneys will file outrageously exaggerated and unprovable claims in an attempt to force the defendant to immediately settle in order to avoid the devastating consequences of the adverse publicity that a trial always brings to public figures.

I didn't attack anyone. I am stating the facts. Her quotes were from her sworn deposition, her own words, so what she said isn't a "publicity stunt" of the plaintiff, but Deen's own words.

I'm just pointing out how ridiculous it sounds to say employers won't hire black people now and your response:

Ray410 might be on to something. If someone wanted to take me through the laundry for saying a word some years ago, I, personally, would avoid them like the plague.

That basically you'd avoid the people responsible for the suit. Just wanted to make sure you knew it was a white person, so you can avoid the right people.

Thanks Sassie! If I see one coming my way I'll go the other direction.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

Paula Deen is a staunch Right Winger, pro-war fascist.

It could be argued that Hillarys callous disregard for Arabs in her Middle East policy of exterminating civillians on a massive scale in Libya and Syria is similar to Nazis blatant human rights violations, which viewed other races as inferior and inconsequential.

Don't forget - Hillary did vote and support the war in Iraq.

Maybe Paula Deen and Hillary would like to hang out?

This thread is about Paula Deen. Try to pay attention.

Look at the similarities.

They're both racist.

The Clintons were quoted as saying "Obama should be serving us coffee," during the 2008 campaign. Its a quote from that Mark Halperin book, "Game Change."

Now we have a right not to be offended? Oh Boy. The government better stop talking completely.

I wondered about that, too. And what was up with all that fake crying? I never saw a single tear roll down that perfectly made-up face.

Why not, if they're anything like this case they'll do better once fired. Deen's business has skyrocketted since her firing. She's now doing better than ever.

do you have any proof that Deen's business has skyrocketed and that she's now doing better than ever?

Says who? A handful of people who are coming to her restaurant? People always came to her restaurant. She's lost endorsements left and right, and others are probably waiting in the wings.

I, like Sangha, am interested in how her business has skyrocketed.
