Exactly. 'Nigger' means black, and that's why it's ok for blacks to say it but not other races. Black people, by virtue of being black, have an inherent legitimacy to use the word where non-blacks cannot, because they are not black. When a Black person says 'nigger' to another Black person, they are pointing out a likeness between them, bringing them closer. When a White person says 'nigger' to a black person, they are pointing out a difference between them, pushing them away. All instances of anyone using the word in any context boil down to that: is the speaker pointing out a likeness, or a difference.

This is not a double standard but a universal rule which applies to any attribute the speaker of the word personally possesses. Gays can call each-other fag and that is in no way offensive because it's a term of endearment pointing out a likeness, but if a hetero says it, that's pointing out a difference, so that's rude.

We generally only see exceptions to this rule among close friends where the issue of race has been transcended.

That is absolutely preposterous. If you allow the use of the word nigger by some in a certain context, not allowing its use in the same benign context in other races is racism.

People of all walks of life will use the word nigger if it is considered acceptable to do so under certain circumstances. Deal with that!

It appears that Ms. Deen's reputation and future have been destroyed by this incident, a result which seems a little out of proportion to the incident, considering that she used a word that many black people use all the time in reference to each other, both in casual conversation and popular songs.

How big a victory and for whom this might be is questionable. Some white employers will now not hire blacks because they will fear the same thing might happen to them if they make a mistake of this nature. Those employers may fear hiring a black person is giving control over their own future to the discretion of that prospective employee, which is what appears to have happened in this case. Other white employers will feel sympathy for Ms. Deen and not hire blacks out of resentment of the huge consequences that befell someone that isn't really an evil or immoral person by any generally accepted traditional standards of immorality or evil.

Certainly no one would endorse her saying what she did, however it is difficult to see that there are any actual winners here now. Everybody is mad and the race relations status quo is even worse.

That is ridiculous. As a white person, I would no more not hire a black person over this, than any other reason. I would hire the best person - as I always have - and color has nothing to do with it.

As far as employers not hiring because they are afraid of lawsuits by black people if they hear this word, well there's a simple fix for that. DON'T SAY THE ****ING WORD!!!!! It's not rocket science. Sheesh, people - I was born and raised in the Deep, Deep South, and I don't say the word. I was raised in an environment where this word was thrown around all the time, to the point where my father wouldn't allow my best friend to eat out of his dishes because she was black. I rose above the bull**** racism that I was raised around, and if I can do it, anybody can.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Hasta la vista, Paula Deen.

The only employers who aren't going to hire blacks after this situation weren't hiring blacks anyway, LOL. And, in time, many of them will be sued for discrimination so good for them, I guess? LOL

Ray410 might be on to something. If someone wanted to take me through the laundry for saying a word some years ago, I, personally, would avoid them like the plague.

Ray isn't just talking about avoiding specific people. Ray is talking about avoiding all black people. Interesting that you would like his post and then verbally back him on that.

The person who filed the lawsuit is white. It is illegal to hire based upon race alone.

It's unethical, certainly, but it's only illegal if the applicant can prove it because the employer is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The bottom line is you have to prove it. If you cannot prove it, then perhaps the law wasn't actually broken, you just got mad.

You're a bit extreme for me in many cases 66 but on this point I would have to agree but for a slightly different reason. There is a huge double standard today when it comes to words like "nigger" and "honky". A white person dares not say the word "nigger" in/out of a work environment for fear of being fired. But i've seen blacks say the word "honky" quite a few times in a few jobs (even at the job) and they were never even reprimanded much less fired.
