There are two (decent) attitudes towards the term, two choices in linguistic revolution:

    1. Make it our own and thus change it.
    2. Abolish it.

    1. is the proper choice but I'm not black so I'll settle with 2. I can't own it and change it, because I'm not black. You guys can do your thing with it, but I'm stayin' outta that.

There is a huge double standard today when it comes to words like "nigger" and "honky". A white person dares not say the word "nigger" in/out of a work environment for fear of being fired. But i've seen blacks say the word "honky" quite a few times in a few jobs (even at the job) and they were never even reprimanded much less fired.
Anecdotal evidence is never good as you are assuming that your situation is the norm.

Of the options you mentioned, there is a lot of debate in the black community about whether to get rid of the word or to keep using it in the manner which we have changed it.

    The jury is still out.

As with poverty, I believe that revolution can only be achieved by making it our own and thus changing it. Unfortunately, I don't see that's an option given personal circumstance in this particular instance, and I must relegate myself to the inferior option (abolition).

There isn't a double standard when the words exist in completely different contexts. A "double standard" is when two situations that are the same are treated differently. "Nigger" and "honkey" are not the same. As far as using either at work, I don't using any slurs at work is appropriate.

Meh, I doubt the food networks decision had anything to do with moral outrage. Industries like that are more concerned with public reaction, and obviously the public can be rather fickle about these things.

Yeah it is ancedotal evidence. But I've lived from one cost to another both north and south and in the middle. Maybe I just lived along some bad routes.

They are both considered racial slurs and as such are the same.

She was not charged with a crime. I was loosely, metaphorically using the expression "if you can't do the time, don't do the crime," relating to her using the word, and then being upset that she was caught. I'm guessing hfd hasn't figured that out yet.
