The Disability Scam: A Great Government Freebie

Physicians who are dedicated to manipulating the system to get benefits for people who don't deserve them are desecrating the process. As are people bent on getting what they can for nothing. Disabilities should be verifiable, but in a valid manner. Remove the theft and graft and it winds up to be half the current cost, if not less.

One has to go to a Dr appointed by SS in the application process.

See that is where you fail, the validity of the program is not in question but the validity of the people taking advantage of the program.

You mean like disabled veterans and their families?

The Numbers Prove The Point

The numbers substantiate a shift to these hard to (dis)prove afflictions. Over the past three decade’s awards for mental illness climbed from 16% of total claims to one third by 2010. During the same period “back pain” increased its market share from 13 to 28%. It is a system begging for abuse. A study by the NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research) found that for workers with low paying jobs, SSDI including Medicare replaced, on average, 90% of working income. (SSDI recipients get free Medicare after two years of receiving benefits.) In times of tepid job growth, like now for instance, wages are often stagnant, so if there is a choice between working at minimum wage versus doing nothing and earning almost equal amounts, sloth trumps exertion much more often than not. What are other explanations why at this juncture of a theoretically improving economy is our nation weighed down by such a bloated system? Well secondly, the qualification standards have been severely watered down. As evidenced by above statistics “back pain” is questioned much less today. It is not difficult to claim otherwise when a person says they are depressed. Also, more attention is paid to the applicants claims of pain and special trust is placed in the report made by the applicants own physician. Third, once invited into the club, why leave. In 1983, 163 per 1,000 people terminated benefits. Jump ahead to 2011 and that number has collapsed to only 74 per 1,000. In a crummy job market the incentive is to stay put and live off the fat of the government. A fourth reason is that the labor participation rate, at 63.7%, is at its lowest levels in generations. This translates that of the millions who have thrown in the towel looking for employment, many have elected to enter the SSDI lottery. This leads us to the huge issue of fraud.

Winston rebutted this claim. Why are you repeating it?

Oh I forgot, you don't care about the facts.

Yet another factor is the ability to collect UI benefits (via constant federal extensions) to keep being without work for that magical one year. The older you are, and the lower your education level, the easier it is to be deemed not retrainable for another occupation. Disability granted next case...

this was taken straight from a government website by forbes, are you saying the government lied? Did Winston lie too?

Yep, the middle class shrinks and we become more and more of a dependent society

Something else to consider is the constantly rising retirement age to get your "full" SS retirement. As the SS full benefit age rises (for some it is up to age 69 now) the easier it gets to get declared unable to do "real" work (construction and other strenuous trades) anymore. You do not see many framing carpenters over age 60 on the typical framing crew. SSDI rates are about the same as your waiting to retire at your designated "full" benefit age plus 3 years, while opting to take "early" SS retirement (at age 62) results in about a 25% reduction in your monthly SS benefit amount. After only 40 quarters (10 years) of working you qualify for SS full benefits, then only increasing your amount of annual income can help you get bigger SS retirement/disability benefits.

What isn't a lie is that you mischaracterized it.

Not when you see them fishing and enjoying themselves while working. And it does not take much time anymore to get on it.

And your qualifications to determine who is and who is not eligible are????????

What percentage of people who are receiving disability do you see fishing and enjoying themselves while working? Hint: "A lot" is not a valid answer.

Show me where I posted that, or apologize for your lie.

Great, I am debating a person who doesn't understand the purpose of a question mark.

Rocketman, (as opposed to rocket scientist) is English your native language?

Pfft try having a very rare congenital cardiomyopathy that only one out of a hundred thousand have. Try walking into the hospital with only a ten percent ejection fraction.

Walk a mile in my shoes. And then talk to me. I can and do achieve.

And what about the people who are ACTUALLY disabled. My dad is, and we get hardly any money from his check, and my sister is turning 18 in a few weeks, and we are losing the 800 bucks that we would get from her as a dependent. Which sucks because now we have to get help from family to be able to eat. And we're too "rich" for food stamps apparently, living on this is just real ****ty.

My response to that is if the fraudsters were kept off or removed, people who legitimately need the assistance such as your father could receive far, far more. Who should MOST be outraged at disability fraud are those who actually do have disabilities preventing their employment.

Do you recommend Star's sister get a job at McDonalds or Burger King or Walmart?

Absolutely if that is the best job she can find. What are you claiming, that everyone who works at McDonalds, Burger King or WalMart should all quit and go on welfare?

Since Cameron's battle against benefit fraud...one third of the long term ''disabled'' have dropped their claims..

I think it was deplorable that companies such as the scooter store pushed doctors to say that patients who were only short term disabled or who use walkers were pushed into prescribing motorized mobility chairs and scooters.

I was happy when I found out they were being investigated for fraud.

There are people who really need mobility chairs and then there are those whose lives would be made easier if they had them but they don't really them.

If she is able to work at even a part time job (at just about anywhere), she can make $800 a month fairly easy. I say part time because she may be in school or want to go to school. And Pell Grants may help with that part.

We have a free disability scooter program in our town..get off bus..get scooter free of charge.and head for the nearest cheap bar..

All I saw was that most of these people were too fat to walk..we also have a free town bus..not full of elderly people who have difficulty in walking etc..but full of fat women with their equally fat children who can't be assed to walk..

It takes 10 minutes to walk from one side of the town to the other...

Disabilities can cause people to gain weight.
When people cannot exercise properly they gain weight.
If a person has limited mobility ( where they are partly mobile but cannot walk more 50 feet with or without a walker ) before stopping and sitting the best exercise is water exercise if they can get into pool most people with limited mobility can increase their strength in the water.
20 minutes of pool walking equals about a mile of regular walking.

I can understand that...how about people who are not officially disabled just obese? Obesity is crippling..These young fat people are a ticking time bomb for the future..
