Rand Paul: Marijuana users lose IQ points and lack motivation

In the cases of control where government has banned something instead of holding the individual responsible, yes I am for that going away.

seat belts, motorcycle helmets?

Do you not understand the distinction between legalizing use and legalizing use while driving a car? Also, notable fact: guns cause about 30,000 deaths a year, whereas pot causes basically none.

you can only post that because illegal substances are not tracked in car accidents or occupational hazards since they are already illegal

Yet, here you are supporting government control over it. Seems you and those that want gun control have something in common. You both want government to intervene to ban it.

It is already banned, no intervention is needed

seat belts, motorcycle helmets?

I don't believe those should be mandatory by the government. I would wear those regardless of legality. If someone else doesn't want to that should be on them

If there's no data available, you're getting your information where, exactly? On what basis are you concluding that marijuana dui's are a problem?

Local police and deputy discussions at the restaurant, it is a big problem here

I will take live facts over intenet gossip from blogs

Are you under the impression that gossip is the same thing as a fact? If not, I'm not sure why you're bringing it up now. I certainly haven't.

So long as he acknowledges that these effects are temporary and not permanent unless done during pregnancy or as a minor then he'll still have my support.

He should look to the careers of (e.g.) everyone who'e ever made money in Silicon Valley. Pretty much everyone out here smokes pot, and we have by far the strongest economy in the country. Clearly Mr. Paul has managed the remarkable feat of sticking his head entirely up his own arse.

And you are suggesting that "everyone whose ever made money in Silicon Valley" smoked pot "all the time" as the hypothetical individual Rand Paul was speaking about does?

People who drink all the time, based on what I've seen in life, tend to be dumber and have less ambition as well. Does that mean I'm stating that anyone who has ever drank, or even who drinks somewhat regularly, are all dumb or lacking ambition? No. It's based around those individuals who use the vast majority of their free time to boozing it up, and who shirk their non-free time responsibilities to get some boozing in as well.

I've known quite a bit of functional pot users who smoke occasionally or even somewhat routinely. I've not known a single pot head, the types that between every class at college and every evening after work (if they actually went, instead of staying in to smoke and screw around), who tokes up every moment they can possibly do it, that I'd consider rather sharp witted or ambitious. I've known some that were like that during college and high school that have since stopped, and became more occasional users, that absolutely seem significantly more intelligent in their day to day actions and far more dependable and driven.

I don't really see anything outlandish with what he said, unless someone ridiculously wants to act like he said words other than those he ACTUALLY said.

Silly Lachean, you're supposed to just assume that he meant it was permanent, and that he meant it was anyone who smoked pot ever in any way, because you're supposed to not like Rand Paul now. Get with the program man, geez.

;)

I am not, although it depends what you mean (and he meant) by "all the time." Sure being inebriated all day is not conducive to productivity no matter what you're taking. Of course you're only addressing a portion of Paul's statement. The other part tended to suggest disapproval of marijuana use in general.

People who drink all the time, based on what I've seen in life, tend to be dumber and have less ambition as well.

People who drink all the time are generally alcoholics, some of whom are stupid, and some of whom are members of Mensa, hold advanced degrees and acquire professional jobs.

I am under the impresssion that arrest and warrant discussions trump what progressive liberals get from the NYT and Huffington Post

Who said anything about either publication? You really ought to stop with the fantasy you've obviously created for yourself. It's not conducive to rational thought.

That's funny since you've been wrong about every assumption you've made about me so far. Like I said: let go of the fantasy. It's not conducive to rational thought.

As mentioned before, he's not wrong. Liberty is the right to do things that aren't good for you.

Simple use.....LOL, that is what I like about hair samples, we never have to hire dopers

I am an alcohol (weekend) partier, and do not use marijuana because I don't enjoy it. That is my disclaimer, because I am about to assert that alcohol is generally far more harmful than marijuana, especially for interpersonal interactions. I so assert.

Now, I have a question: Do you hire drinkers? That is, do you test for it, or even ask candidates?

I have been around partying almost my whole life, but especially since about 14. I am far older than that, now. It has been 20 years since I used marijuana for recreation. I feel that I have a good grasp from experience of the effects on people, how habit forming substances are, and I have read extensively on the subject area. Before I was knowledgeable, I used certain drugs which I would not use ever again, now. It has been 16 years ago now since I have used those drugs. From this experience and knowledge, I honestly don't understand people's bizarre treatment of recreational pot users. You seem to scoff at the notion of a 'recreational' user, but would you automatically call a person a "drunk" who says they like a Martini now and then?

Do you speak about these things from long experience? I ask because if so our experience would seem so far apart. Have you never known a group of people who were strictly recreational in their usage (long term)?

I have a dead stepson that started as a recreational pot user, he died from an overdose of another drug looking for that better high. Very few people I know that start with pot say with it.

What is this nonsense? Of course they track what illegal substances are involved in car accidents. It's the subject of a great deal of academic study.

To date ..., seven studies using culpability analysis have been reported, involving a total of 7,934 drivers. Alcohol was detected as the only drug in 1,785 drivers, and together with cannabis in 390 drivers. Cannabis was detected in 684 drivers, and in 294 of these it was the only drug detected.

... The results to date of crash culpability studies have failed to demonstrate that drivers with cannabinoids in the blood are significantly more likely than drug-free drivers to be culpable in road crashes. … [In] cases in which THC was the only drug present were analyzed, the culpability ratio was found to be not significantly different from the no-drug group.”

I'm sorry for your loss, but if he was getting his weed from a pharmacy or legitimate retailer, they wouldn't have been pushing hard drugs on him. And if it was legal, they would have had more time and resources to deal with the nasty drugs. Also, did he really start as a weed smoker? He'd never tried alcohol or prescription medication before that?

He wasn't pushed he was the seeker of the ultimate high, pot affected his judgement, it is a shame as he was 3rd in his college class

I must be missing something. I don't want to push you into talking about it if you aren't comfortable with it, but what exactly makes you think that weed made him "seek the ultimate high"? I've been smoking it since I was about 14 and I don't even get the urge to drink alcohol, let alone anything stronger. How exactly did it affect his judgement and make him want something he wouldn't have wanted regardless? And again, is marijuana really the first recreational drug he ever used? Never tried alcohol or anything?

I don't mean to be at all rude or disrespectful, but I don't understand the supposed link to weed in any of this. It just sounds like a scapegoat for someone who doesn't seem to know much about it.

I think what people are missing here is weed is like food for some people. Obesity is caused by compulsive behavior. Some people who use weed can't stop once they start, it is compulsive behavior. Some people are more prone to addiction, those are the people that need protecting.
