This is really sad. I thought it was a very cute commercial. Contrary to popular belief, this just shows that even after the election of a black president, racism is still strong in this country.

By the way, it is not just white racist but black racist to.

What? I thought only middle-aged heart disease wary white folks ate cheerios.

According to the Slate link, the YouTube commenting feature was disabled for the product's ad clip. How many millions of people don't post on YouTube? How many millions of people don't care at all about this issue?

The point that I am making is that it is still a big issue in our country. Let say you take 10 of your closest friends, out of the 10, how many of them would be uncomfortable with their son or daughter marrying a black man or woman? Be honest

I know a lot of family members and associates that would get upset if a white person was lets say brought home for thanksgiving. And it is very sad.

It says to me that some people have too much time in their days and not enough ways to fill it - perhaps less than 3 yrs worth of unemployment insurance payments would help solve the problem.

As for the ad, it was cute but I have to say that the casting was awful - the kid didn't like like either of the parents and the man and woman, even in an age of interracial marriage, didn't look a bit like a couple you'd expect to be together. For that reason, it looks contrived and maybe that's why there's outcry. In any event, those who don't like it need to get a life.

You what CanadaJohn, I read a few of your post and I must say that even though we don't share a lot of the same political views, you make a lot of sense about what you post

Thank you sir - that's very kind - but watch out, your brethren on the left may not be happy with you for that!!

Although I see you've been around here for over three years, you don't post often, so I haven't seen much of yours - the wisdom of this post will have me looking out for your posts more often :)

The rightwing talking point is that there is no more racism in the US -- except the racism of liberals and blacks.

Just eat your cereal and go with it!

Of course it was contrived, they were all actors. Still, God forbid you show a white woman with a black man....some people are raving lunatics (not you, of course, but some people.)

Perhaps I see more of it here in Toronto than some Americans are used to.

Toronto's a very cosmopolitan city (and one of my favorite cities), so that's likely.

It's funny in some respects - Toronto is about 47% minority population while the rest of Canada is about 15% - I think we have a lock on most of the social services provided to new immigrants and refugees so we attract the vast majority of new entrants. It's fun - I love all the different people here - just wish some of them didn't bring their fights from home with them when they get here.

I've had a few friends in interracial marriages - inevitably they get more heat and abuse from the black community than the white community. It's sad, I've actually had members of my church refuse to attend bible study because of stuff like "that white girl who steals black men is there". :(

Why are certain people so attracted to social services?

Why are certain people so attracted to social services?

Because, up til now, Canada has provided very generous benefits to refugees who enter our country and those who illegally enter our country and are waiting for their immigrant status to be adjudicated. The country provides them with benefits greater than citizens receive in most cases. It's why we've had a Roma problem the past ten years, with "gypsies" travelling from safe European countries to Canada, burning or flushing their passports on the way, and claiming refugee status when the plane lands - it's much easier and more lucrative than picking tourists' pockets in Europe - besides, while you're receiving Canadian welfare, housing, and full health and dental care, you can always pick pockets here on the side too. What's not to like??

Yeah hahaha, but really.

I think that especially for refugees, you've had your whole life flipped over, sometimes you arrive with nothing but the clothes you're wearing. Now you have to rebuild your life in a place where you don't even speak the language. So yeah, social services are a good thing to help you get adjusted and resettled.

cpwill you are correct. The racism from the black community comes mainly from black women. I've dated white women in the past and I would get nasty stares from black women. It all depends on what region of the country you live in if you are going to experience white heat from interracial relationship. I'm from Los Angeles and that is a after thought to most white people there. However, I went to my brother-in-law college graduation in Joplin, MO and he has a white fiance. Her family is very nice and loving. We all went out to dinner after the ceremony and the evil stares from the white people there were just as bad as the stares from the black women.

I personally don't care anyway. As long as my immediate family is cool. My family is too mix anyway :)

Where we can put a end to this is by teaching our kids to marry someone because you love them not because they look like you.
