High school commencement speaker tells females: stay at home, donít be CEOs

High school commencement speaker tells females: stay at home, don

Social studies teacher Peter Heck gave the commencement address given at Eastern High School in tiny Greentown, Indiana. As WRTV reports, the speech was a humdinger ó at least the part about women in the workplace.

ďI challenge you to devote yourself to your families and your children. If you choose to have a career, Godís blessings upon you,Ē Heck orated. ďBut I challenge you to recognize what the world scoffs at, that your greatest role in your life will be that of wife and mother. The greatest impact you could ever contribute to our world is a loving investment in the lives of your precious children. To solve the problems plaguing our society, we donít need more women CEOs. We need more women as invested mothers.Ē

I'm gonna guess a few people here at DP think this train of thought hits a big nail squarely on the head.

Whatever - what's the point of existing at all, then? Seriously - why bother even living when all people expect of you is to wipe asses and runny noses?

There certainly isn't a point in going to Kindergarten through High school and graduating if you're going to do nothing with your life other than have kids - just crawl out of beds and do nothing but clean **** from the time you're one.

You know - and then what do you do when you're husband becomes an abusive asshole?
Or falls and breaks his back and can't work?

...Do I sound pretentious and immature? My reality is that being a stay at home mom has been the worst thing for this family - it's overrated and screwed me, my husband and the kids over big time.

What about single women or those who don't want children? I do think that both parents need to put family and children first as a priority over their jobs, but having a career, not having children, no getting married, and all those other things are perfectly fine.

When did being a great wife and mom become a bad thing? The only thing wrong with this statement, as I see it, is that he didn't also encourage the male students to be great husbands and fathers and forget all that wasted time working late and on weekends chasing the CEO ring and spend more time with your wife and kids and help them be successful in their lives too - it's the greatest reward.

I don't think the message here is for women not to go to college, get a job, etc. The message here is, invest time in your kids life. Granted, it was poorly worded, but I think we do need to reaffirm the commitment parents have to their children. You don't have to stay at home, just when you are at home, pay attention to your kids. Get off your iPhone, Ipad, and Facebook and listen to what your kids have to say. You might be surprised at just how much you will enjoy it. Much more so than "liking" so stupid status.
