High school commencement speaker tells females: stay at home, don

Social studies teacher Peter Heck gave the commencement address given at Eastern High School in tiny Greentown, Indiana. As WRTV reports, the speech was a humdinger — at least the part about women in the workplace.

“I challenge you to devote yourself to your families and your children. If you choose to have a career, God’s blessings upon you,” Heck orated. “But I challenge you to recognize what the world scoffs at, that your greatest role in your life will be that of wife and mother. The greatest impact you could ever contribute to our world is a loving investment in the lives of your precious children. To solve the problems plaguing our society, we don’t need more women CEOs. We need more women as invested mothers.”

I'm gonna guess a few people here at DP think this train of thought hits a big nail squarely on the head.

Whatever - what's the point of existing at all, then? Seriously - why bother even living when all people expect of you is to wipe asses and runny noses?

There certainly isn't a point in going to Kindergarten through High school and graduating if you're going to do nothing with your life other than have kids - just crawl out of beds and do nothing but clean **** from the time you're one.

You know - and then what do you do when you're husband becomes an abusive asshole?
Or falls and breaks his back and can't work?

...Do I sound pretentious and immature? My reality is that being a stay at home mom has been the worst thing for this family - it's overrated and screwed me, my husband and the kids over big time.

What about single women or those who don't want children? I do think that both parents need to put family and children first as a priority over their jobs, but having a career, not having children, no getting married, and all those other things are perfectly fine.

When did being a great wife and mom become a bad thing? The only thing wrong with this statement, as I see it, is that he didn't also encourage the male students to be great husbands and fathers and forget all that wasted time working late and on weekends chasing the CEO ring and spend more time with your wife and kids and help them be successful in their lives too - it's the greatest reward.

Children are responsibility personified

I don't think the message here is for women not to go to college, get a job, etc. The message here is, invest time in your kids life. Granted, it was poorly worded, but I think we do need to reaffirm the commitment parents have to their children. You don't have to stay at home, just when you are at home, pay attention to your kids. Get off your iPhone, Ipad, and Facebook and listen to what your kids have to say. You might be surprised at just how much you will enjoy it. Much more so than "liking" so stupid status.

Who said being a great wife and mother was a bad thing? Who?

Unsure if I'm allowed to "like" this post.....

Well that's moronic. Also wildly unrealistic given current economic conditions.

Current? Does current mean for at least the past few decades, as well as for the very-distant future as well?

In this case I suspect it does mean that ;).

No, it wasn't said explicitly - it was implied by the way you presented this and by the title of the thread - the commencement speaker didn't say what the title says, at least not in the paragraph quoted - he actually challenged young women to ignore societal wisdom and choose being a great wife and mother - he didn't say stay at home, don't be CEO's etc. In fact, he said God bless you if that's the road you choose.

So you're the prototypical "a woman's place is in the home, cooking, cleaning, barefoot, and pregnant" type of girl ???

That would be a no. But I'd love it if more women could afford to stay at home. I've seen young women struggle endlessly to juggle children and career. Worn out. Exhausted. Guilty. Raising kids without discipline because they perceive it as easier. Spoiling them with material things thinking that makes up for the one thing they do want -- mommy's time. I've seen women have a baby (maybe their second) and go back to their full-time job at 6 weeks. WTF? How nigh-onto-impossible is that?

There's plenty of down sides to being a stay-at-home mom -- especially when one's spouse trades his 40-year-old wife for two 20's. And with divorce at 50%? The odds aren't in her favor.

Surprise. Women didn't always work outside the home. And the greater majority of them reveled in that. More volunteerism, well-behaved well-adjusted children giving them TIME -- the one thing money can't buy. Men had it easier as well.

I recognize times have changed. I just wish parents would at least commit to letting mommy stay home until her youngest is in school. It's really not too much to ask.

No, he said:

"The greatest impact you could ever contribute to our world is a loving investment in the lives of your precious children. To solve the problems plaguing our society, we don’t need more women CEOs. We need more women as invested mothers.”

So yes, he is in fact telling young woman that they should stay at home. More importantly, he's telling them that their contributions to the world are best achieved through staying at home and squeezing out babies. That is both ridiculous and positively archaic thinking.

That's your take on it, which you're entitled to - if you believe that more women CEOs will solve the problems facing society, you're entitled to that opinion - that's not my take of what he's saying, and your paraphrasing for him doesn't make it what he said, it just shows your bias.

How else can you possibly interpret the phrase "greatest impact?" The clear implication is that anything else a woman (and just a woman) can possibly do is of lesser importance. That's ten different kinds of misogynistic, and demonstrably false.

Yes well - we'll see how things fair when my husband dies from heart failure, all too soon in life, and I have to support 4 kids without a decent career under my belt.

The title of the thread is the title or the article linked. None of it is my words.

The way I presented what?

In 2013 people need 2 incomes to support themselves and their children llpeople can litterally not afford to stay home all day to look after the children . The greatest impact for a women was raiseing children in the 1950's . Besides I met a few males who are practically arm candy for woman those roles are changing .
