Cheerios Ad Brings Out the Racists

I just saw this ad on CNN, I didn't see a problem with it until the host said it brought out the racists.

Despite the uptick in interracial couples on TV, the advertising world, as Ad Age reported last year, has been slow to catch up. A handful of ad campaigns have included such couples, but more the norm are ads like the ones for eHarmony or Viagra, which seem to go to great lengths to show same-race couples, as David Morse wrote. Among the exceptions: a 2004 Verizon ad, a white father and Latina mother were featured in a campaign that Slates Seth Stevenson described as more like a sitcom, successfully avoiding the sentiment of being a gimmick or pandering.

Some times I get the impression that there are 10x more people out there trying to find examples of racism than there are actual racists.

    Cute kid!

Why would someone have a problem with it is beyond me. Interracial marriages have existed for a long, long time.

The nuances in her face as she looks at the box....despicable.

Cute commercial. This is something I recognized a long time ago, especially about TV shows in the UK, they have a lot of interracial couples. Now I don't know if it's because that's how the culture is in general or if it's something specific they're trying to put on TV, but it seems to me that a large percentage of couples shown in a lot of British TV shows are interracial. That's entirely fine, of course, but I hate to see agendas pushed, just because they're agendas.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Given the rather large backlash posted on the Cheerrio social media site I'd say you don't need many folks looking for racism, plenty of racism oh so eager to express itself in a rather cowardly way than in any face to face scenario, looks to me that racism comes looking for you via modern faceless technology...

For those of us who don't follow the social media nonsense, is this the predictable handful of dedicated to the cause posters, or a widely practiced behavior?

I don't twitter or facebook. It made the morning news as I had my first cuppa. Not sure if this can be downplayed as just a few kooks, more like a growing trend where the faceless interwebz allows everything from bullying to racism.

Yeah, I think pot-stirring trolls have a good deal to do with that. They're not true believers, they just want to stir up the drama.
