I just saw this ad on CNN, I didn't see a problem with it until the host said it brought out the racists.

Despite the uptick in interracial couples on TV, the advertising world, as Ad Age reported last year, has been slow to catch up. A handful of ad campaigns have included such couples, but “more the norm are ads like the ones for eHarmony or Viagra, which seem to go to great lengths to show same-race couples,” as David Morse wrote. Among the exceptions: a 2004 Verizon ad, a white father and Latina mother were featured in a campaign that Slate’s Seth Stevenson described as “more like a sitcom,” successfully avoiding the sentiment of being a gimmick or pandering.

Some times I get the impression that there are 10x more people out there trying to find examples of racism than there are actual racists.

I love that commercial, made me laugh.

Cute kid!

Why would someone have a problem with it is beyond me. Interracial marriages have existed for a long, long time.

The nuances in her face as she looks at the box....despicable.

Cute commercial. This is something I recognized a long time ago, especially about TV shows in the UK, they have a lot of interracial couples. Now I don't know if it's because that's how the culture is in general or if it's something specific they're trying to put on TV, but it seems to me that a large percentage of couples shown in a lot of British TV shows are interracial. That's entirely fine, of course, but I hate to see agendas pushed, just because they're agendas.

Given the rather large backlash posted on the Cheerrio social media site I'd say you don't need many folks looking for racism, plenty of racism oh so eager to express itself in a rather cowardly way than in any face to face scenario, looks to me that racism comes looking for you via modern faceless technology... :peace

For those of us who don't follow the social media nonsense, is this the predictable handful of dedicated to the cause posters, or a widely practiced behavior?

I don't twitter or facebook. It made the morning news as I had my first cuppa. Not sure if this can be downplayed as just a few kooks, more like a growing trend where the faceless interwebz allows everything from bullying to racism.

Yeah, I think pot-stirring trolls have a good deal to do with that. They're not true believers, they just want to stir up the drama.

This alone is unsurprising—what is remarkable is that despite the fact that interracial couples and multiracial children continue to see huge increases in the population, advertisement agencies and the companies that hire them aren’t being more aggressive in catering to that demographic. Are they afraid of offending that small group of Americans who may feel adamantly enough about “race-mixing” to boycott their products?

lol 1) it's the internet. extrapolating it onto some larger group is silly being that it's a self selecting process (most people that take no issue with interraccial couples would even feel a need to comment on the point)

2) It's not exactly uniform in the sense other demographics are. You can have a white husband and a asian wife, etc. Probably complicating "appeals" to them

3) While they might be growing, they still only make up 10% of couples and likely represent an even smaller number of the population as a whole. So small and difficult to cater to is likely more of a driving factor than racism

it's the internet, mate. Racists here about it, get outraged, and then post a comment. Those that don't care don't post comments.

lol @ growing trend. I guess someone has been caught in Senator Steven's internet tube for the past decade

LOL.....ahhh I said it is the faceless interwebz and it seems to be a new venue for racists to vent with little worry about being held accountable for their racism.

but it's not new. It's like the pedos.

It's a great commercial! I lol'd! :D

I agree with everything you posted except, well, the 10% stat seems a little low to me. Perhaps using self-identification, but the actual? This country has been though quite the mixing of the paint. My ancestors were eager, successful and not so picky copulators.

That may actually be the first American, mainstream-made media with a black man/white woman pair-up that I've ever seen. It's odd the lengths that Hollywood and advertising has gone to up to now to avoid that specific matchup. Funny thing I've noticed about British television, however, is that the the black man/white woman couple is so prevalent that it seems statistically unlikely given their demographics.

that was the figure cited in Pete's article. Though I imagine that you are correct it is self identifying (though ethnicity, and to a lesser degree race, tend to be in general)

Agreed. Add to that "passing" that was very common from the beginning of our nation on to about 40 years ago.

Sooner or later women will get the vote, if this keeps up.

No disrespect, but hat is easy to say when you are not the recipient of it.

I bet a good number of those users were just trolls. Shame that such a good commercial got hit like that.
