Cheerios Ad Brings Out the Racists

I love Cheerios.

I just saw this ad on CNN, I didn't see a problem with it until the host said it brought out the racists.

Despite the uptick in interracial couples on TV, the advertising world, as Ad Age reported last year, has been slow to catch up. A handful of ad campaigns have included such couples, but “more the norm are ads like the ones for eHarmony or Viagra, which seem to go to great lengths to show same-race couples,” as David Morse wrote. Among the exceptions: a 2004 Verizon ad, a white father and Latina mother were featured in a campaign that Slate’s Seth Stevenson described as “more like a sitcom,” successfully avoiding the sentiment of being a gimmick or pandering.

Cheerios Ad Brings Out the Racists (VIDEO)

It's pretty cute, but she'd be cleaning up those Cheerios.

I love Cheerios.
I do, too. And little kids like that. Later on they turn into nasty adults with partisan views and wild sex and liquor and dope and pressure cookers.

That may actually be the first American, mainstream-made media with a black man/white woman pair-up that I've ever seen. It's odd the lengths that Hollywood and advertising has gone to up to now to avoid that specific matchup. Funny thing I've noticed about British television, however, is that the the black man/white woman couple is so prevalent that it seems statistically unlikely given their demographics.

Clearly you've never seen Arrow.

Some times I get the impression that there are 10x more people out there trying to find examples of racism than there are actual racists.

I have TWO issues here:

1) Go to the Cheerios Facebook page, and you will see that nobody needs to look for examples of racism. They are right there in our faces. Here are a couple of examples:

" It's a real life commercial! Lazy black man on the couch collecting welfare! Love it!"

"As a Christian parent and adult I do not approve of the bi-racial commercial as it goes against everything I believe in."

NOTE: The guy who made the second comment has the gall to call himself a Christian? Shame on him. Jesus is going to kick his ass.

2) But I DO have a legitimate beef with Cheerios. They are marketing a product that is essentially genetically modified food, and dare to convince people that it's good for children, as well as your heart.

You forgot the fact that, if this was real life, the white woman would weigh about 350.

I kid, I kid.

I don't think Honey bo bo counts as real life .

Then she is going to have to work out and lose that weight.
