    Amid scandals, Obama's approval dips

    Obama's approval rating has started to collapse. How low will it go? With a special prosecutor looking increasingly likely, Eric Holder apparently committing perjury, the press refusing to play any more of the administration's "off the record (please carry the water for us)" games... - the floor's the limit.

    As his administration grapples with a series of recent controversies, President Obama faces a dip in his approval ratings…The drop is particularly noticeable among independent voters, among whom 37 percent viewed approved of his performance and 57 percent disapproved. A month ago, 42 percent of independent voters approved and 48 percent disapproved.

    Particularly concerning is that Obama has lost the trust of the American people:
    the poll cites that "Americans are divided 49-47% on whether Obama is honest and trustworthy, down from 58-37%...This could be especially damning for the administration because the issue of trust is relatively non-partisan. If the public loses the foundational trust that the American government puts its job of serving citizens ahead of partisan politics, it could spell disaster

    I go with RealClearPolitics, which aggregates seven polls. They also show a slight decline in approval, and slight increase in disapproval, in the past few weeks.

    However, those numbers are perfectly normal for Obama. He started out very high (as most Presidents do), and after the first year his approval/disapproval rates settled in to the 40-50% range. He's had a few positive bumps (e.g. the death of Osama Bin Laden, the election).

    Basically, there's not much to see here, at least not yet.

    The true test will be when, and how much, Congressional democrats break rank with the administration. If this decline continues, and it will, the closer we get to 2014 the greater the pressure on dems will be to put some distance between them and the president. The bipartisan call for special prosecutors is an indication that democrats are anxious to appear proactive, and also put an end to the daily publicity surrounding these events.

    Obama's numbers will never dip as low as Bush's did because democrats stand by their man no matter what. It's why I call them lockstep libs, it is their greatest strength and their biggest flaw.

    More Damaging news for Team Obama. Now what do you think of the IRS Commissioner visiting the White House 157 times under Obama but only once in 4 years under Bush. Do you think Obama can still say he didn't know anything? Looks like they may have his ass caught up in flat out denying what he knew about all along.

    It's damaging with the Independents for sure. Moreover with the Whistleblowers being brought like they are. This will be carried into 2014 and it won't matter how much the Demos walk lock stock and barrel. They were the ones calling for More government and more expansion. Now they are using the excuse the government is to big. Bit they do have more Straight Dope on Obama with the IRS.

    Independent confirmation of a trend we spotted last week:

    "President Barack Obama gets a negative 45 – 49 percent job approval rating, compared to 48 – 45 percent positive in a May 1 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, conducted before the IRS allegations surfaced. The president’s biggest drop is among independent voters, who give him a negative 37 – 57 percent score, compared to a negative 42 – 48 percent May 1. He gets a negative 9 – 86 percent from Republicans and a positive 87 – 8 percent from Democrats, both virtually unchanged. Women approve 49 – 45 percent while men give a negative 40 – 54 percent score...Americans are divided 49 – 47 percent on whether Obama is honest and trustworthy, down from 58 – 37 percent, the last time Quinnipiac University asked the question September 1, 2011."

    The president has been battered by a three point drop in overall approval, a four point uptick in disapproval, cratering numbers among independents, and a whopping 19-point swing on trustworthiness. The scandals are taking their toll on this White House.

    The IRS' go-to excuses of "bad management" and "horrible customer service" are just as damaging to the cause of Big Government as proof of malice and deceit.

    As the investigations continue, I suspect a lot of Americans will have questions about the DC report Katie referenced in her post. Former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman visited the White House three times as often as his boss, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, during Obama's first term. Think about that. To put that figure in perspective, the previous IRS commissioner visited 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue... exactly once in four years, during the Bush administration. Shulman was there 157 times under Obama. Why?.....snip~

    I love you man, and not in that 'let's take long hot showers together' sorta way.

    During the BushII years lock step Republicants rode with BushII through all kinds of shot and shell. It wasn't until the total collapse of our economy did the rat's bail, and yes they bailed hard. A very famous man from my state once observed very correctly, 'I am not a member of an organized political party, I'mma Democrat!'

    Oh how the course of national history would have been changed if the dems could muster half the lockstep lemming dance the Pubs can.

    Obama would have to launch a war in Syria over a nuclear program suddenly 'discovered' at the warhead stage- to be later found out a fabrication.

    Then install missiles in the former Soviet 'stans to 'defend' against rogue missiles.

    And finally have the domestic economy collapse again.

    In order to get anywhere near the dismal ratings of BushII.

    The 'Conservatives' are throwing everything they have against the wall to see what will stick. I don't see it sticking for long or causing any 'collapse' as those on the Right are predictably claiming.

    Which is a tragic flaw. No man is flawless, and to stand by him throughout blatant failures and indescretions is absurd and a lack of character.

    Heya Bronson. Yeah you would have thought the left would have figured that part out.....U know the part about how the Independents are viewing things. Do you think that Flash will dawn upon them? When they are out talking about.....its Conservatives that are driving all of this now. Do you think missing one word out of a statement will be able to help them understand the likes of CBS and Politico? Since they wont be able to blame R-wing news sources?
