Obama's approval rating has started to collapse. How low will it go? With a special prosecutor looking increasingly likely, Eric Holder apparently committing perjury, the press refusing to play any more of the administration's "off the record (please carry the water for us)" games... - the floor's the limit.

Poll: Amid scandals, Obama's approval dips - CBS News
As his administration grapples with a series of recent controversies, President Obama faces a dip in his approval ratings…The drop is particularly noticeable among independent voters, among whom 37 percent viewed approved of his performance and 57 percent disapproved. A month ago, 42 percent of independent voters approved and 48 percent disapproved.

Particularly concerning is that Obama has lost the trust of the American people:
the poll cites that "Americans are divided 49-47% on whether Obama is honest and trustworthy, down from 58-37%...This could be especially damning for the administration because the issue of trust is relatively non-partisan. If the public loses the foundational trust that the American government puts its job of serving citizens ahead of partisan politics, it could spell disaster

I love how the thread right above this one claims the exact opposite :lamo. Which one to believe

I go with RealClearPolitics, which aggregates seven polls. They also show a slight decline in approval, and slight increase in disapproval, in the past few weeks.

However, those numbers are perfectly normal for Obama. He started out very high (as most Presidents do), and after the first year his approval/disapproval rates settled in to the 40-50% range. He's had a few positive bumps (e.g. the death of Osama Bin Laden, the election).

Basically, there's not much to see here, at least not yet.

The true test will be when, and how much, Congressional democrats break rank with the administration. If this decline continues, and it will, the closer we get to 2014 the greater the pressure on dems will be to put some distance between them and the president. The bipartisan call for special prosecutors is an indication that democrats are anxious to appear proactive, and also put an end to the daily publicity surrounding these events.

More Damaging news for Team Obama. Now what do you think of the IRS Commissioner visiting the White House 157 times under Obama but only once in 4 years under Bush. Do you think Obama can still say he didn't know anything? Looks like they may have his ass caught up in flat out denying what he knew about all along.

It's damaging with the Independents for sure. Moreover with the Whistleblowers being brought like they are. This will be carried into 2014 and it won't matter how much the Demos walk lock stock and barrel. They were the ones calling for More government and more expansion. Now they are using the excuse the government is to big. Bit they do have more Straight Dope on Obama with the IRS.

Q-Poll: Obama Approval Suffers Nine-Point Negative Swing.....

Independent confirmation of a trend we spotted last week:

"President Barack Obama gets a negative 45 – 49 percent job approval rating, compared to 48 – 45 percent positive in a May 1 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, conducted before the IRS allegations surfaced. The president’s biggest drop is among independent voters, who give him a negative 37 – 57 percent score, compared to a negative 42 – 48 percent May 1. He gets a negative 9 – 86 percent from Republicans and a positive 87 – 8 percent from Democrats, both virtually unchanged. Women approve 49 – 45 percent while men give a negative 40 – 54 percent score...Americans are divided 49 – 47 percent on whether Obama is honest and trustworthy, down from 58 – 37 percent, the last time Quinnipiac University asked the question September 1, 2011."

The president has been battered by a three point drop in overall approval, a four point uptick in disapproval, cratering numbers among independents, and a whopping 19-point swing on trustworthiness. The scandals are taking their toll on this White House.

The IRS' go-to excuses of "bad management" and "horrible customer service" are just as damaging to the cause of Big Government as proof of malice and deceit.

As the investigations continue, I suspect a lot of Americans will have questions about the DC report Katie referenced in her post. Former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman visited the White House three times as often as his boss, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, during Obama's first term. Think about that. To put that figure in perspective, the previous IRS commissioner visited 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue... exactly once in four years, during the Bush administration. Shulman was there 157 times under Obama. Why?.....snip~

Obama's numbers will never dip as low as Bush's did because democrats stand by their man no matter what. It's why I call them lockstep libs, it is their greatest strength and their biggest flaw.

I love you man, and not in that 'let's take long hot showers together' sorta way.

During the BushII years lock step Republicants rode with BushII through all kinds of shot and shell. It wasn't until the total collapse of our economy did the rat's bail, and yes they bailed hard. A very famous man from my state once observed very correctly, 'I am not a member of an organized political party, I'mma Democrat!'

Oh how the course of national history would have been changed if the dems could muster half the lockstep lemming dance the Pubs can.

Obama would have to launch a war in Syria over a nuclear program suddenly 'discovered' at the warhead stage- to be later found out a fabrication.

Then install missiles in the former Soviet 'stans to 'defend' against rogue missiles.

And finally have the domestic economy collapse again.

In order to get anywhere near the dismal ratings of BushII.

The 'Conservatives' are throwing everything they have against the wall to see what will stick. I don't see it sticking for long or causing any 'collapse' as those on the Right are predictably claiming.

Which is a tragic flaw. No man is flawless, and to stand by him throughout blatant failures and indescretions is absurd and a lack of character.

Heya Bronson. :2wave: Yeah you would have thought the left would have figured that part out.....U know the part about how the Independents are viewing things. Do you think that Flash will dawn upon them? When they are out talking about.....its Conservatives that are driving all of this now. Do you think missing one word out of a statement will be able to help them understand the likes of CBS and Politico? Since they wont be able to blame R-wing news sources?

As you can see by the graph the Bush approval rating surged after 9-11 then fell steadily over the course of his terms. The dems never supported him except for a brief period after 9-11 so those were Bush supporters falling off at a steady rate.

It's not just Obama's approval that is dropping either. Hillary is still liked overall, but she's losing Independents too.

National (US) Poll - May 31, 2013 - American Voters Like Clinton O | Quinnipiac University Connecticut

Her score is down substantially from her all-time high score in February. The drop in her favorability is substantial among men, Republicans and independent voters. One reason for her drop may be that 48 percent of voters blame her either a little or a lot for the death of the American ambassador in Benghazi," Brown added.

Yeah, and with all starting to know that the Libyans had warned the State Dept 48hrs in advance of the attack. I doubt Hillary can claim she didn't know anything about sending Stevens out there in the first place. Plus they already hooked her for managerial failures. That was their own Review board. Trying to absolve her would be ludicrous.

Although she may be liked......hopefully she sees the writing on the wall. As most know how she likes to exaggerate things. Course this time. She knows.....she cant just shed a fake tear and all will be forgotten.

Sadly this was all timed too early, IMO. Imagine this coming out in October of 2014? American's have a short memory on things like this this and the politicians know it.

Tim-

Tim-

Which is why Issa will wait to call Hillary back.....as well as allow the Democrats to hold up as much of his investigation as they want. Time is against them. Already he is spacing out the Whistleblowers. Which is just over Benghazi. Sure would hate to see anything else pop up wherein more people come out of the Woodwork. Then you know the Demos are abandoning ship on Obama.

Already they are starting to speak out about him.

And just when I was gonna soap your back ya pull this crap!

Even if the country was divided 50/50 there was longer than a 'brief period' where ALL Americans supported our 'Wah time Setting President'. Where BushII lost much needed support among the People was Independants. As late as 2008 just under half the dems thought BushII had at least a fair amount to do with the stopping of terrorist attacks. Pew

But in a Dec 2008 poll on is his legacy one of accomplishments or failure only 33% of Repubs thought he it is failure, while 83% of dems thought it was a failure , BUT so did 68% of Independents.

So at the bitter end 2/3rds of the Repubs still clung to the belief BushII wassa winner while it was Independents by the same percent who saw him as a Loser.

I do understand many highly partisan folks see the world as 'with me or agin me' but the truth is as many folks want what works over party label.

The key point of governance you overlook is the GOP in Congress rode hard to the bitter end with BushII even as the crash was starting, only as the Presidential elections heated up did the congress critters suddenly embrace 'change'.

Nice try though... :peace

Your partisan assessment of the graph is noted and rejected.

Laughing, there is a TV show called myth busters where one of the guys says, "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" How is reminding you there is such a thing as independent and examining the polls by party affiliation somehow partisan?

Given your graph doesn't show what political party is still hugging BushII and the Pew polls do, I'd suggest the Repubs stayed until their nuts got wet n then fled the sinking ship! While poll numbers can swing around a bit, the usual breakdown is 25 to 30% either dem or repub with the rest 40% or so Independent. Given that and the final dismal approval rating in the mid 20's seems like the lock step Repubs road it down to the bitter end. More so in Congress.
