From Republican to Independent and now to the Democratic Party

R.I. Gov. Chafee, an independent who was a Republican, plans to become a Democrat

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an independent, has notified senior Democratic officials that he intends to switch his registration to the Democratic Party before an expected tough re-election fight in 2014.

The Democratic National Committee released a statement from President Barack Obama praising Chafee as “an independent thinker and leader who’s unafraid to reach across party lines to get things done.”

Obama added, “I’m thrilled to welcome Linc to the party of Jefferson and Jackson, Roosevelt and Kennedy, and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead."

I'm sure this boils down to campaign funding. The two party duopoly continues to dominates this country into submission.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Linc to the party of Jefferson and Jackson, Roosevelt and Kennedy, and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead."

Yeah Obama, Roosevelt fits, the rest DO NOT.

RI is a democrat state, so this insures he won't have to run in a primary. Cheap political stunt. Wonder what the people who thought they voted for an "independent" think of the switch.

Bad news for the Democrats I think. By far the least popular governor in the country. If they don't primary him, I think the GOP has the advantage even in deep blue Rhode Island.

.... another ex-Republican that has been adrift since his party left him and the Dems caught up with his his positions. If Reagan were alive, he would be announcing his return to the Democratic party as well.

Jefferson just rolled in his grave I'm sure.

That isn't true. Ask Arlen Specter.

The news was hopping for a few weeks about the Democrats "big tent" that would allow Arlen Specter into their midst but failed to retract that load of hogwash when Specter failed to survive his first primary as a Democrat.

But then that's because he'd still have Alzheimer's.

Being governor is a Chafee family tradition, and it is much easier work than shoeing horses.

From Democrat to Democrat and now to the Democratic Party

Somewhere in the archives I've stated the guy is a Democrat because he walks like one, talks like one, and smells like one. Folks like him do damage to the Republican party with the dishonesty of who they are. Better to lose the seat than have a RINO throwing sand in the gears.

If Reagan were alive, he would be announcing his return to the Democratic party as well.
ROTFLOL...

Is that because the Democrats are for limited government? Tight fiscal policy? A strong defense? Low taxes? A government that doesn't have it's gooey fingers and other appendages in our private parts when it comes to health care?

An absolutely ridiculous post.

Also he did a lot of things that would get him called a RINO.

No, RINOs are the members of the Tea Party and other extreme candidates that sit far to the right of Ronald Reagan

Certainly lost on a members of a political party that has become absolutely ridiculous... a party has past no more than 4 noteworthy pieces of legislation in 100 years; leads on nothing but filibusters, stalled appointments, obstruction and most times passing the same piece of legislation more than 35 times in nothing more than symbolic votes. This is a party that counts Bachman and Cruz amongst its leaders, that does nothing but grandstand. Sorry, this is not the party of Reagan and Dole, much less Lincoln and Roosevelt. This is the party of the ridiculous, for the ridiculous. Its time for this party to either make itself relevant or cease to exist; but its time for this party to PARTICIPATE in the government and govern; not grandstand.

Republicans should stop talking about their love for Reagan, a quintessential political pragmatist, something that today's RINOs (the party extremists) seem to hate. Its a empty romantic notion to speak fondly of him when he was willing to raise taxes, he expanded the government, increased debt and deficits. He was willing to compromise to move his agenda forward. How can you argue that he fits into today's party when we worked in the system and traded favors... He wouldn't stand a chance of winning today. Ronald Reagan would be labeled a RINO in today's party (though he would be the only real Republican there).

Suggesting that Reagan would be rejected by Republicans is not some wack-a-doo notion perpetrated by me, but has been widely debated and suggested even by Republican leaders.

Its time for the Cons to take stock of how far they have come and how far off the rails they are....

1. If you haven't noticed... we have more debt than our annual GDP, plus we have 60TRILLION in unfunded liabilities.
2. If you haven't noticed... socialists states have been collapsing.
3. If you didn't notice... It's country club republicans wringing their hands.

4. Reagan would have made it today... why? Because he could articulate Conservatism so even Demokrats could understand it. Reagan was a pragmatist who got almost everything he wanted because he was a master negotiator. I like that kind of pragmatism... putting the opposition on their knees. You should learn his history.

5. We don't need to be pragmatic and concede to Demokrats on their failed ideas. We need to take them down... roll back the absurdity that has all but destroyed a great country. Just wait if we lose status of being the world's currency... it won't be pretty. The result of failed Socialist policies pushed by the drug dealing Demokrats.

Ignorance is a valuable tool for Demokrats... that and ignoring the Constitution... the two go hand in hand. Add a compliant press corps(e) and you've got a weapon of mass destruction... as Demokrats have proven.

To be honest, Chaffee was always Republican in name only. While he could not be considered a Liberal, he is definitely left of center. He was never a fit with the GOP, even when the GOP was more moderate. This is a proper move on Chaffee's part.

What he has allegiance to is his election. What else would you expect from a politician.

Pretty much. And in this day and age election is nothing but a money-pot. So a politician's allegiance is to the money and it's sources.

That's not what the far-right says!

Establishment DC with Dems and Rs from both sides ought to form one party. That way we will know where all the power mongering thieves are.

I think govenor Rick Scott of Florida or Tom Corbitt of Pennsylvania have worse approval ratings

Chafee seem to be a fine fellow.

The man knows something about work, he was a farrier for 7 years.

Have you checked recently? Nate silver just made a post about this. Scott and Corbett were both underwater, but chafee outpaced everyone at-39.

Or maybe Mr. Chafee is just a RINO and sides with government as the ruling power over the people while the tea party and liberty part continue to grow?

Or maybe he is a slave to the elites in government and is just selling out for power (to keep his position).

When it comes to politics there are only two answers.

A) People can take care of themselves and live via a small local or state government.

B) People need federal government or federal government intervention to live and dictate outcomes.

If you subscribe to A) you're not a progressive.

If you subscribe to B) you are a progressive.

If you ever wonder why people tend to ignore your posts... it's because of ridiculous generalizations pulled out of your butt like this one in attempts to try and classify people in your pre-built boxes that don't actually exist in the real world.

Generally when people try and contract issues into two simple views with no gray area they are wrong. I believe this is one of those times.
