Sen. John McCain Monday became the highest-ranking U.S. official to enter Syria since the bloody civil war there began over two years ago, The Daily Beast has learned.McCain, one of the fiercest critics of the Obama administration’s Syria policy, made the unannounced visit across the Turkey-Syria border with Gen. Salem Idris, the leader of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army. He stayed in the country for several hours before returning to Turkey. Both in Syria and Turkey, McCain and Idris met with assembled leaders of Free Syrian Army units that traveled from around the country to see the U.S. senator. Inside those meetings, rebel leaders called on the United States to step up its support to the Syrian armed opposition and provide them with heavy weapons, a no-fly zone, and airstrikes on the Syrian regime and the forces of Hezbollah, which is increasingly active in Syria.

Wonder if he knows that he is meeting with a group that allies itself with an extreme islamists groups? God, i hope we stay out of this civil war.

McCain is an idiot. I wonder who gave him the OK to go there?

As much as I detest Obama, Thank God McQueeg wasn't elected POTUS.

I'm sure he's used to it. Some Americans ally themselves with extreme Islamist groups and he keeps working with Americans.

I hope we stay out of it too. I also hope that Senator McCain received the blessing from the Obama administration to do what he did or at least informed them of his intentions. Senators do not make foreign policy, the president does.

I've never understood why politicians seem to want to engage these fanatical groups. They really never seem to accomplish much with these little meetings. I remember Obama talking about engaging Ahmadinejad. That worked out well too.

McCain is probably the most hawkish US Senator with respect to the Middle East. I agree the place is extremely volatile and dangerous. I'd rather see us use our collective resources to eliminate our or anybody else's reason to be involved in the area. You have to give it to him though, the man is fearless.

How does meeting with rebels equate to working with Americans?

There are Americans that ally themselves with extreme Islamists. He should not meet with America! There are Europeans that ally themselves with extreme Islamists. He better not be going there next! Oh, yeah, and obviously we better stop talking to pretty much the entire Mideast. There's not a state to be found without those who ally themselves with extreme Islamists. If he wants to deal with a group wherein no one allies themselves with extreme Islamists, we better make him ambassador to the moon.

Are we really gonna refuse to meet with any group that have some members who ally themselves with extreme Islamists? What kind of idiotic foreign policy is that?

You know the best part? The OP poster thinks we should engage in talks with Iran and that we should talk with Assad. Laughable hypocrisy.

Helping the rebels doesn't necessarily mean we want them to win. Harassing al-Assad for a few more months/years than they might have been able to would be to our advantage, no? al-Assad continues to be worn down...Islamist money and personnel stay in the Middle East...what's not to like?

lol, that is a pretty good point

So, do you have any problem with McCain meeting with the rebels?

If they take him prisoner, we don't really want him back this time.

With people that tie themselves to Al-Nursa who is basically a part of Al-Qaeda, yes. Who wouldnt?

I used to be a hugh McCain fan, back in 2000. Since then, I've been repeatedly disappointed in him. No longer the maverick, McCain just tows the party line or grandstands for effect.

This was grandstanding. I'm unimpressed.

Are you against meeting with Assad or the Iranian regime?

I'm sorry that your discovery of McCain being a hawk has ruined it for you. I can assure, he did not change - you merely don't like an aspect of him you've discovered.

Meeting with them. I believe they should meet with international community. I however dont support war hawk John McCain who has been in support of arming the rebels over and over again meeting with them trying to use this as a ploy to get us to arm them.

So... McCain meeting with the rebels is ok? What if he met with Assad or the Iranians.

I don't like the fact that he turned into a George W. groupie, stumping for Bush policies that he opposed while campaigning against Bush, then supporting two wars that have dragged on for a decade and driven the economy to the verge of collapse. Also, he chose Sarah Palin as a VP candidate. Bushlite and Bubblebrain. I sure as heck couldn't vote for that... nor could I vote for an unqualified empty suit who'd never actually performed any job he'd been elected to, merely started an immediate campaign for a higher position.

Been a bad couple of decades for presidential candidates, imo. Seriously bad.

Well, crapping all over a pow war hero is one way to spend the holiday.

Cheers!

I am. It doesn't do any good. Just emboldens Ahmadinejad and the mullahs and makes them feel important.

I'm pretty ok with it. The point is that the OP poster is against meeting with the rebels on the grounds that "some of their members ally themselves with extreme Islamists" - and at the same time - wants the US to meet with Assad and Iran.

I wish we could just ignore the whole lot of them.
