Menendez: We donít have 60 votes for immigration reform bill

One of the chief authors of the Senateís Gang of Eight immigration bill is still hunting around for 60 votes in his chamber.
Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) said in an interview set to be aired Sunday that the Gang of Eight does not have the votes necessary to break a potential filibuster on the Senate floor ó at least right now.

ďWe donít currently have 60 votes identified in the Senate,Ē Menendez said on ďAl PuntoĒ with Jorge Ramos, according to an English-translated transcript provided by Univision. ďWe need to add more votes on the floor.Ē

I hope they don't get the 60 votes. No immigration reform should have amnesty, pathway to citizenship for illegals, dream act or some other term for amnesty. I already contacted my elected officials telling them to not vote for the so called immigration reform bill.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I think it'll eventually end up with enough votes to clear the Senate. So far I think they're working the amendment process right way to build as much bipartisan support as possible. If it does pass and get to the House though, I don't think it could pass.
There should be Instant Runoff Voting

We don't need immigration reform, we need to be enforcing the immigration laws that are already are on the books.

What exactly would your ideal immigration reform entail?

Statements like this make absolutely no sense. The entire point of the reform is that the current laws on the books are flawed. We know they are flawed because they are not working. We need to reform the laws to something which is more likely to work.

I know your statement is popular rhetoric, but it really doesn't make any sense.

1.Our current policy should be is to encourage illegals to go back to their countries. We can do that by making it nearly impossible for them to live in our country, punishments for those who come here illegally and punishments for scum who hire illegals so they can't get jobs. These few things should suffice-

a.Require that in order to get any ID or driver's license you present a birth certificate, green card, or certificate of naturalization and social security card. After that require a state issued ID or driver's license in order to the following-

    -enroll yourself into school
    -enroll your kids into school
-apply for welfare, food stamps, section 8 housing and any other tax payer assistance for yourself and or your children
-get a business license,fishing/hunting permit, building permit, license to practice law, food handlers permit, gun license(in states that require a permit to buy a gun),concealed carry permit(in states that require a license to conceal carry) or any other tax payer funded service
-open a bank account, cash a check, use a credit/debit/pre-paid card, apply for a loan,or wire money.
    -rent,borrow,lease or buy property
-rent,borrow,lease or buy a motor vehicle.
    -get utilities

b.Crack down on the scum who hire illegals.Treat them no different than we do drug dealers, mobsters and other criminals who profit from illegal activities. We do that by severely fining them, sending them to prison and make them subject asset seizure and forfeiture laws to take any property or money they acquired as a result of hiring illegals(after a criminal has proven them guilty).

    2.Mandate E-verify for every employer.

3.Hire enough border guards to secure the border. If we can give away billions to other countries then we can most certainly hire enough border guards to secure our border.

Kind of hard for something to work when the government only does token enforcement.

    No.

What's long overdue is filibuster reform.
Also, we need to legalize recreational drugs and prostitution.

How much of your tax dollars are you willing to give up for strict enforcement?
The morality of abortion is not a religious belief, any more than the morality of slavery, apartheid, rape, larceny, murder or arson is a religious belief. These are norms of the natural law of mankind and can be legislated even in a completely religionless society.
