Westboro Baptist Church Member Blames Oklahoma Tornado On Jason Collins' Coming Out

Re: Westboro Baptist Church Member Blames Oklahoma Tornado On Jason Collins' Coming O

I didn't say evangelicals have praised them (though I'm sure some have). I've said they haven't condemned them. And that's troubling.

so what exactly are you looking for here? Want Billy Graham to get on TV, or what? It's not like "evangelical christianity" is some monolithic structure with a handful of top leaders who can speak with authority on X topic.

Re: Westboro Baptist Church Member Blames Oklahoma Tornado On Jason Collins' Coming O

Now there's a nonprofit who should be revoked by the IRS. What good could they possibly do?

Remind us who not to be maybe? Nothing unifies people like they are in opposition to these fruit loops. I suspect the Klan and the Black Panthers would high Five each other in one of those counter protests.

Re: Westboro Baptist Church Member Blames Oklahoma Tornado On Jason Collins' Coming O

No, things are moving pretty slow, but at least they are moving. I haven't returned to politico, that clapcha bs really turned me off. Then they redid everything and it was time to move on.

The articles on there are still very good and often wind up here on threads verbatim. There are so many splinter wings to the Repubs, all trying to out-fright each other. Which party do you suppose Westboro votes for the most? Do rightie talkers criticize them as lefties do? NO

did you pull that number out of a hat?

you have no data to support such a claim.

why are you making things up, demonizing those you have hate for.

yes that church, is off the deep end.......but come on, dont say things you cant posibliy know.

for someone who professes to be a christian, you seem to have a lot of hate in your heart.

You don't think there are tens of millions of evangelicals in the US. Google it.

Yeah, for starters. Evangelicals have indulged in anti-gay rhetoric, some of it not too different from Westboro. (Remember 9-11 lesbian witches!) They need to distance themselves from those who do the same.

If evangelicals want to make heretical and ignorant interpretations of the gospel to indulge their fear and hatred of gays, that's their business. But at least they should pretend to condemn the outright ugliness of Westboro.

It's heretical and ignorant to read the Bible as written? News to me...

From what I have seen, yes they do. Westboro is not well like by members of both parties down here in Georgia.

i am sure there are, but does that mean everyone thinks the same thing...no.

i am a evangelical as is my mother, and we think that the church is question, is not doing the lords work .

Too complex a subject for here, but evangelical homophobia is heresy. Paul says so Romans 2:1.

They think gays are a threat. No doubt about it. It's bred into their particular heresy, which focuses on homophobia instead of the love of the gospel.

You are one to talk about ignorance. Romans 2:1 is talking about hypocrisy, of judging someone for doing something that you are also doing. It is a theme about judging wrongfully or by one's own preferences, not about saying "The bible says that is wrong".... which is what someone does when they say that a straightforward reading of Romans 1:26–27, 1 Corinthians 6:9–10, and 1 Timothy 1:9–10 and, Jude 1:7 calls homosexual activity sin, in the New Testament.

There are alternative interpretations, but calling the straightforward one heresy is quite a mouthful.

well i know already you going to be fired up by what i am going to say.

but their are some people in every group who are some what of a threat, becuase every group is faction, and wants its special interest served, no matter what over the objections of other people.

i am sure you would agree in the NRA, there are some extremist.

some in the environmentalist movement, some in the every group.

but tell me, if a christian sees sin, should that person act as though it does not exist?...should they remain silent, and go along with it as not to anger another person?

Jesus spoke of sin, he stop anyone from engaging in it but once, while he was in the temple..... but he made clear ...sin is wrong.

this church are zealots to the max becuase of their wild actions they take, ......but that does not make everyone, who speaks against the sin of homosexuality a zealot.

I love how evangelicals have to gloss the plain words of Paul.

Paul says in Romans 1 that idolators were punished by God by instilling in them "unnatural" desires to have gay sex (note that this means they were heterosexual and note that the sin is idolatry -- which Paul later relates to greed -- not homosexuality).

Then in Romans 2 he say "Therefore you have no excuse, O man, whoever you are [say an evangelical christian], when you judge another; for in passing judgment upon him you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things"

So Paul tells evangelicals NOT to judge gays, and what do they do: judge gays. Therefore, evangelicals stand judged.

It's really that simple.

The ignorance displayed in your assertions here is truly astounding. Truly.

Up is down, left is right and inside is outside, too.

I'm not saying evangelicals are all extremists. I am saying that one of their (regrettable) fixations is condemning gays. They seem fixed on this issue. Of course Jesus never mentioned the issue, not even the word (he was too busy talking about justice for the poor -- something evangelicals avoid talking about) and those who cite Paul on it are misstating his words and intent.

But there they are fixating on gay sex, when the gospel message is about faith expressing itself through love. As I pointed out in the post above, their judgment of gays already judges them. Paul says explicitly not to judge those outside the church. Period. He says not to judge the (apparently) homosexual idolators of Romans 1. Period. So what do the evangelicals do? Judge gays outside the church. It's as if they set out to deny Paul's admonitions.

Keep ignoring the actual words of Paul to promote your ideology. It's OK with me. I'll stick with what Paul actually says. You can have Pat Robertson.

Meanwhile: "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love" Gal 5:6. Evangelicals don't do what counts and have judged themselves because of it. Romans 2:1.

Anita Bryant: a blast from the homophobic past of the religious right. When orange juice was sweet and gay love dare not speak its name.

that is becuase the gay issue is at hand currently, Jesus did not speak of homosexuality, but it is a sin.

justice for the poor is not social justice , which is what is being preached, Jesus was not about force of any kind, but social justice is.

again who are seeing a focus on homosexuality, , becuase it is at the forefront of arguments today in our state governments and approaching our federal government, this is why the issue in growing among Christians.

yes some christian do judge homosexuals the person,...it is the sin, that christian are suppose to have issue with not the person, god and christian, are supposed to love their fellow man.

but did Jesus say, "he who is without sin, cast the first stone", ....but concluded " go and sin no more".

from your reading of the bible, from what i get, you saying Christians, can only discuss sin inside closed doors of the church, and not in the public square, when anything takes place in the public square every citizen, has a right to voice his concern.

as a christian as you profess, you know homosexuality is a sin, ..do you not?

one does not have to be a zealot over the issue, but one as a practicing christian, does not have to be silent and allow those whom wish to support a sin, go unabated.

my friend, i am not here to physical stop you from engaging in the actively you seek, however when things from that actively are brought into the public square, everyone has a right, to speak in support or opposition.

which seems to be a problem with some people...as if some have...... no right to criticize or to praise.

well if that's is your opinion your welcome to it has any american is.

however their are many highly educated people, who are people of faith.

When will people stop paying attention to Westboro. They want press. Not giving it to them might help them go away.

On this point I agree. Their 15 minutes is long past due.

Not convinced it is. There are books on this explaining the different readings and how meanings were changed under King James. There is room for doubt.
