Westboro Baptist Church Member Blames Oklahoma Tornado On Jason Collins' Coming Out

A prominent member of the Westboro Baptist Church is drawing a link between the Oklahoma tornado's devastation and a local team's support for openly gay NBA star Jason Collins.

Fred Phelps Jr., the son of Westboro Baptist Church minister Fred Phelps, tweeted the following:

OK Thunder's Durant flips God by praising fag Collins. God smashes OK. You do the math. #GodH8sFags #FagsDoomNations #FearGod #GodH8sU

Like clockwork.

At least they are consistent. Our leaders could learn something from this instead of trying to be all things to all people at all times.

...and they get to do all this tax-free no less....

Oh the irony. I wish the IRS had investigated Phelps.

I'd like tro believe that they have but if you follow the rules, you can get away with anything and evade taxation.

There are 450,000 "churches" in the US, none of them pay taxes while many espouse variants on hatred. The "non-profits" should be eliminated.

When will people stop paying attention to Westboro. They want press. Not giving it to them might help them go away.

The represent a conservative strain in the American church that needs to be exposed and ex communicated as heretics.

I agree. And I'm a Christian. Churches should pay taxes like every other enterprise in America. If they engage in charity, they get the deduction and their taxes will be reduced. This will be an incentive for churches to get back to the Christian mission of feeding the hungry rather than bashing gays.

They represent an extremely tiny group of lunatic fringe nutjob opportunists who like to act insane and then sue people who get pissed off enough to do something in retaliation.

They have nothing to do with mainstream christian churches, any more than the most recent Muslim suicide bomber represents Habib the local Quiky-Mart clerk.

Re: Westboro Baptist Church Member Blames Oklahoma Tornado On Jason Collins' Coming O

Exactly! I always paid my employees top dollar and big bonuses because there is no surer tax deduction and you get to be loved while doing the right thing.

All these "non-profits" could use up their income doing good deeds and reduce their tax exposure to zero. If they decide to retain earnings to build bigger and gaudier edifices, then let them depreciate it just like us peasants have to.

Their anti-gay rhetoric and hatred is in line with virtually every evangelical church in the US. Millions of (heretical in my view) American Christians -- tens of millions -- believe exactly what Phelps and his ugly crew announce.

News to me (said the Evangelical Christian who has been going to Evangelical churches for 47 years...)

News to me (said the Evangelical Christian who has been going to Evangelical churches for 47 years...)

Not news to me (said a Lutheran who listens carefully to the hatred spewing from most evangelical churches).

Remember the lesbian witches causing 9-11 meme of Pat Robinson/Fallwell? And they're respected members of the evangelical clan.

You don't understand that lack of knowledge in your own argument, do you?

Re: Westboro Baptist Church Member Blames Oklahoma Tornado On Jason Collins' Coming O

Is there anything Westboro doesn't hate. They picked funerals of dead soldiers, this and dozens of other things.

And they belong squarely with the fright-wing of the Repubs, whether they like it or not. Do you have a departure date? Articles on Politico still good. Comments pretty one-sided.

Hence the excommunication suggestion! An official label of "NOT ACTUALLY CHRISTIAN" would fit nicely.

The sad part is, they aren't born this way. This much hate isn't natural. It's a learned behavior. They are taught this kind of hate.

Oh buddy, if I only could.... each and every one of them would have that as a glowing neon sign over their heads everywhere they go for life.

No, things are moving pretty slow, but at least they are moving. I haven't returned to politico, that clapcha bs really turned me off. Then they redid everything and it was time to move on.

Nonsense. The GOP would never condone picketing the funerals of dead soldiers in this manner. Nor would any self-respecting conservative worth the name.

Westboro hates everythign that isn't Westboro, and everyone in the USA returns the favor. One thing you'll see Libs and Cons agree on ALL THE TIME on DP is how much we ALL despise Westboro.

I haven't seen the evangelical community come out and clearly and without reservations condemn Westboro for its use of Christianity as a platform to foment hate. And that's troubling.

Horse ****. I've yet to hear one single Evangel say a good word about them. We despise them because ignorant people tar us by association.

I didn't say evangelicals have praised them (though I'm sure some have). I've said they haven't condemned them. And that's troubling.

did you pull that number out of a hat?

you have no data to support such a claim.

why are you making things up, demonizing those you have hate for.

yes that church, is off the deep end.......but come on, dont say things you cant posibliy know.

for someone who professes to be a christian, you seem to have a lot of hate in your heart.
