When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects light

Please tell me this is a joke When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects light from the sun - Blogs - Galva News - Galva, IL
Bill Nye [above], the harmless children’s edu-tainer known as “The Science Guy,” managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.
As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.
But don’t tell that to the good people of Waco, who were “visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence,” according to the Waco Tribune.
Does anyone actually believe the moon produces it own light? I can understand thinking it was made of cheese, but producing its own light

If this is true, it is pretty baffling.... how could anyone take the (correct) assertion that the moon reflects the sun's light as "irreverence"?

    I have no idea.

I assume it has to be a joke.

Is this another example of the excellence of the teaching profession and public education in America?

1-I believe it is possible there were people that goofy. 2-The story would have a bit more credibility if it didnt reference a story from a story taken from from a story allegedly in a newspaper that doesnt exist, 4 years ago, cited by someone OTHER than a blog from the site "Think Atheist".

    just sayin...

    Archived copy of the article.
Bill Nye 'The Science Guy' is entertaining and provocative at MCC lecture

WacoTrib.com: Central Texas news, all day.

    The newspaper that doesn't exist.

Seriously dude, this took four seconds.

Ah. I looked a bit. The original source article is in ThinkAtheist.... not exactly an unbiased source... who claims a Texas news site once published the story but then removed it, thus making it impossible to verify.

In the ThinkAtheist article there is a little more detail... they assert that Nye not only said the Moon reflected the light of the sun, but quoted Genesis 1:16 about "the greater light and lesser light", asserting the moon was not a light but a reflector. If this is true, then some may have been offended, not necessarily that he said the moon reflected the sun's light, but that he choose to put it in a context as something like "science proving the Bible wrong" or somesuch.

That article also says "several people" booed and/or left, which could be construed another way as saying "A FEW PEOPLE in the audience booed and/or left"... but if you put it that way it wouldn't make Waco look so redneck, would it?

Assuming there's any truth here at all, which is apparently unproveable. There is nothing on Snopes about it.

Probably because it was only a couple people. It's not something that will see widespread media attention, couple random people in some random town say something stupid, CALL ANDERSON COOPER! WOo!

So it made a local paper and nobody cared except a bunch of left wing bloggers. I once talked to a guy who said there were buildings on the other side of the moon. He was much more interesting. edit: And this man wanted to learn how to fly an airplane.
