Please tell me this is a joke When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects light from the sun - Blogs - Galva News - Galva, IL
Bill Nye [above], the harmless children’s edu-tainer known as “The Science Guy,” managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.
As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.
But don’t tell that to the good people of Waco, who were “visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence,” according to the Waco Tribune.
Does anyone actually believe the moon produces it own light? I can understand thinking it was made of cheese, but producing its own light

If this is true, it is pretty baffling.... how could anyone take the (correct) assertion that the moon reflects the sun's light as "irreverence"?

I have no idea.

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

I assume it has to be a joke.

Is this another example of the excellence of the teaching profession and public education in America?

The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.

lolwut

Apparently, it makes you wonder what they do teach.

1-I believe it is possible there were people that goofy. 2-The story would have a bit more credibility if it didnt reference a story from a story taken from from a story allegedly in a newspaper that doesnt exist, 4 years ago, cited by someone OTHER than a blog from the site "Think Atheist".

just sayin...

Ah. I looked a bit. The original source article is in ThinkAtheist.... not exactly an unbiased source... who claims a Texas news site once published the story but then removed it, thus making it impossible to verify.

In the ThinkAtheist article there is a little more detail... they assert that Nye not only said the Moon reflected the light of the sun, but quoted Genesis 1:16 about "the greater light and lesser light", asserting the moon was not a light but a reflector. If this is true, then some may have been offended, not necessarily that he said the moon reflected the sun's light, but that he choose to put it in a context as something like "science proving the Bible wrong" or somesuch.

That article also says "several people" booed and/or left, which could be construed another way as saying "A FEW PEOPLE in the audience booed and/or left"... but if you put it that way it wouldn't make Waco look so redneck, would it? :lamo

Assuming there's any truth here at all, which is apparently unproveable. There is nothing on Snopes about it.

Probably because it was only a couple people. It's not something that will see widespread media attention, couple random people in some random town say something stupid, CALL ANDERSON COOPER! WOo!

So it made a local paper and nobody cared except a bunch of left wing bloggers. I once talked to a guy who said there were buildings on the other side of the moon. He was much more interesting. edit: And this man wanted to learn how to fly an airplane.

I've seen a couple different variations on this story in recent years. Nearly all of them are complete nonsense.

The "official" story, which I got off of a link to a local Texas newpaper that I don't have any more, was that Bill Nye gave two lectures at a local school.

The first lecture went great. The second lecture went pretty good as well, but a single whack-job in the audience got bent out of shape when he made some sort of smart alecky comment regarding the Bible and subsequently stormed out of the auditorium with her children.

The massively exaggerated version of the story Left Wing news sources like to circulate is really nothing more than a lot of sensationalist anti-religious propaganda.

How can you understand thinking it was made of cheese?!?!

Going to take a wild ass guess that this comment was facetious.

Here's the actual article from the Waco Tribune.

Bill Nye 'The Science Guy' is entertaining and provocative at MCC lecture

Audience members who expected to see Bill Nye “The Science Guy” conduct experiments and wow their children received quite a surprise Wednesday when Nye spoke at McLennan Community College. Nye instead addressed such topics as Mars exploration, global warming and energy consumption, particularly oil and gas. He even ruffled a few religious feathers along the way.

The scientist with a background in stand-up and sketch comedy kept spectators interested, entertained and at ease with his funny, sometimes hilarious, delivery. Speaking as part of MCC’s Distinguished Lecturer Series, Nye spoke to two audiences, one at 1:30 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m., of about 600 each. He said the first audience, though littered with young children listening to some rather adult scientific topics, “was very supportive.”

The second group also was rapt from the beginning, greeting the scientist with a raucous standing ovation upon his introduction. “You haven’t heard the presentation yet!” Nye told them. Opening with a discussion of Mars and his hopes for further discovery on the neighboring planet, Nye encouraged the audience to take interest in discovery and “change the world,” a mantra he repeated throughout. Nye indicated that the presence of water in Mars’ atmosphere - evidenced by the planet’s ability to form frost - leads him to believe that there is a strong possibility that the planet once supported life.

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” He pointed out that the sun, the “greater light,” is but one of countless stars and that the “lesser light” is the moon, which really is not a light at all, rather a reflector of light. A number of audience members left the room at that point, visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence. “We believe in a God!” exclaimed one woman as she left the room with three young children.

Nye also was critical of what he said was governmental agencies’ lack of action, even lack of understanding, in protecting the Earth from global warming and wasted resources. Nye’s educational science show won 28 Emmy awards during its television run from 1992-98.

It seemed most in attendance were pleased to hear Nye speak, and some were even awed by the presence of a childhood icon. “How cool is that, to be face to face with the man, Bill Nye?” said Jared McClure, who worked sound and video for the event. “And he’s funny, too.”

A random whack-job made a scene. Everyone else thought things went great.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Just out of curiosity (and remember...Im granting you that some people could REALLY be that goofy)...but do you think its possible that maybe they werent upset about the source of light (sun and moon) so much as the guy feeling the need to drag in and disparage religious belief in the first place?

Again, it never even happened. See my post above.

The story is nothing more than a slapped together propaganda piece.

I could believe that a few people got upset and stomped out. Heck...some folk dont give a lot of their beliefs much thought (religious types OR nonreligious types)...lets be honest.

I dont think I have ever even heard anyone say the moon emitted its own light, and I know some dummies.

This is Texas, after all. It's no surprise that they're so clueless about basic science.
