High School Track Team Disqualified When Runner Gestures Thanks to God

The Columbus High School Mighty Cardinals had won the 4x100-meter relay--by seven yards, no less--and had a shot at the state championship. That was until Junior sprinter Derrick Hayes pointed to the sky. Hayes's father, K.C., said that his son made a gesture of thanks to God, but raising a hand to the sky is considered excessive celebration according to the state scholastic rules. And with that, the team was disqualified.

    1. How do they know it was God?
    2. Did they ask him?
    3. And what does it matter if he had?

Whoever was involved with the DQ should be DQ'd from officiating sport events.

    The DQ is 100% ridiculous.

'They' didn't know and didn't care. This isn't a religious thing but by rule no one can raise an arm after an event. That is apparently what he was cited for and the DQ issued.

FYI Maggie started a thread on this already....

    OK didn't notice...

Having played a ton of sports at a pretty high level (and one professionally)... raising your arm(s) in victory is a reflex action.

This BS is ideal for a Monty Python skit. A mix of Monty Python and Dr. Strangelove.

I'm sure we can merge the two.

I'd like to point out that although it might seem a little petty to DQ the team because of raising an arm, a rule is a rule.

I often see athletes interviewed seconds after a victory. The first thing they say is "I've got to thank God." Now, how do the athletes on the losing team feel?... It would seem it is irrelevant to even raise an arm.

God hates everybody who runs a little bit slower. Didn't you know that?

I have a feeling that this wouldn't be appearing on breitbart.com if the kid said he was thanking Allah.

Haha that's actually a really good point.

I would love to see an athlete hold a straight face and thank Zeus on national television, or some other god no one expected to hear.

    That's probably true.

I guess the flip side is you would be defending him if he were an openly homosexual Muslim teen mom on welfare.

I know for sure breitbart.com wouldn't be bothered by the DQ if that were the case.

There wouldn't have been any uproar or disqualification if he did so. Common sense has left most schools these days, most school board hear the words common sense and they start going through their change purse to see how much cents they actually have.. Come to think about, society as a whole has lost a lot of common sense.that use to be there in the past.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.
