[h=2]The Columbus High School Mighty Cardinals had won the 4x100-meter relay--by seven yards, no less--and had a shot at the state championship. That was until Junior sprinter Derrick Hayes pointed to the sky. Hayes's father, K.C., said that his son made a gesture of thanks to God, but raising a hand to the sky is considered excessive celebration according to the state scholastic rules. And with that, the team was disqualified.[/h]
High School Track Team Disqualified When Runner Gestures Thanks to God

1. How do they know it was God?
2. Did they ask him?
3. And what does it matter if he had?

Whoever was involved with the DQ should be DQ'd from officiating sport events.

The DQ is 100% ridiculous.

'They' didn't know and didn't care. This isn't a religious thing but by rule no one can raise an arm after an event. That is apparently what he was cited for and the DQ issued.

FYI Maggie started a thread on this already....

OK didn't notice...

Having played a ton of sports at a pretty high level (and one professionally)... raising your arm(s) in victory is a reflex action.

This BS is ideal for a Monty Python skit. A mix of Monty Python and Dr. Strangelove.

I'm sure we can merge the two.

I'd like to point out that although it might seem a little petty to DQ the team because of raising an arm, a rule is a rule.

I often see athletes interviewed seconds after a victory. The first thing they say is "I've got to thank God." Now, how do the athletes on the losing team feel?... It would seem it is irrelevant to even raise an arm.

God hates everybody who runs a little bit slower. Didn't you know that?

I have a feeling that this wouldn't be appearing on breitbart.com if the kid said he was thanking Allah.

Haha that's actually a really good point.

I would love to see an athlete hold a straight face and thank Zeus on national television, or some other god no one expected to hear.

That's probably true.

I guess the flip side is you would be defending him if he were an openly homosexual Muslim teen mom on welfare.

I know for sure breitbart.com wouldn't be bothered by the DQ if that were the case.

There wouldn't have been any uproar or disqualification if he did so. Common sense has left most schools these days, most school board hear the words common sense and they start going through their change purse to see how much cents they actually have.. Come to think about, society as a whole has lost a lot of common sense.that use to be there in the past.

ABSURD! Totally absurd. Whoever made this ruling is an idiot!

I think you are trying to say it's common sense to let people believe what they want and praise when and where they want?.. I think?

What's next?

DQ'd for waving to a cheering crowd?

From the OP linked article
"Officials ruled that the gesture violated a state scholastic rule against excessive celebration, which includes raising one's hands"

and some wonder why the US is going downhill socially.

We are turning into a country where you can't celibrate success or accomplishments for the fear of offending someone. You can't openly express your faith, because someone may be offended. This has got to change.

I wonder if the rules folks would have DQ'd a Muslim. You realize that cartoonists run into trouble with these folks. And BTW, there probably wouldn't be a gay Muslim, The religion frowns on homosexual activity.

They are getting a little over excessive with the ruling. If the kid had got down on his knees and started worshiping Jesus or Muhammed or Ronald McDonald then that would be excessive celebration. But nah, raising an arm is not what I call excessive. What about all those cheerleaders in the tight shorts?

So an athlete broke a non-religious rule and Christians are complaining about being persecuted again. Imagine my surprise...

I guess you haven't been to many track meets. :)

Really?
Proof.

You can't prove a negative. Given the hypothetical, how about you prove that they would.

If you need proof that breitbart is biased....well that should be fairly obvious to anyone.

Well of course they wouldn't DQ a Muslim, they're only out to persecute Christians.

Again... you made the claim above... prove it. "YOU KNOW FOR SURE... "

Excessive celebration penalties take some of the fun out of watching sports.

I remember the old Miami Hurricanes football team, they were so much fun to watch. They would dance after touchdowns, and have crazy celebrations. It made for great entertainment.

Now, all of that stuff is illegal.

Sometimes I think we forget that sports are there to entertain.

Also, I think there is a bit of racism in there as well. White America wants their sports to look a certain way.

No, at least for me its not about that. Its about what a stupid rule.

There was no reported taunting. So what is wrong in celebrating a little ones success or accomplishments? Some boards are taking things to extreme.

Are you one who thinks winning/success should not be celebrated?

This is just like that wrestler who held up the match to pray and then complained about being disqualified. Rules are rules, and you don't get a special exception because you broke them with religious intent. Now, I think raising your arm or cheering or something like that does not qualify as "excessive" celebration, but that's not what the thread is about. It's about pretending that a similar gesture of non-religious intent wouldn't have qualified while this did. And that is nonsense.
