    sometimes America is very silly.

We are, and Pete Stark is the very embodiment of that notion.

"Reason" is what got us into the predicament we are in to begin with. Why should we celebrate a day of it?

which predicament is that .... and what role did "reason" play?
Every political good carried to the extreme must be productive of evil.

Just another in a long list of attacks on religion in general and Christianity in particular.

Reason didn't get us into any predicament, irrationality did.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

San Francisco Congressman Pete Stark is in the U.S. House of Representatives combatting the National Day of Prayer for the second year in a row, calling for a National Day of Reason. Stark proclaimed Friday:

“The National Day of Reason celebrates the application of reason and the positive impact it has had on humanity. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm the Constitutional separation of religion and government… I encourage everyone to join in observing this day and focusing upon the employment of reason, critical thinking, the scientific method, and free inquiry to improve our world and our nation.”

The National Day of Prayer began in 1952 when Congress passed a joint resolution signed into law by President Truman to observe a national day of prayer. President Reagan signed an amended version of that law in 1988 which set the official day as the first Thursday of every May. Read more about this national day’s history on National Day of Prayer’s website. Every year the President signs a proclamation making that year’s National Day of Prayer official. President Obama’s proclamation this year can be read here.

Secularists started calling for a National Day of Reason in 2003 when the American Humanist Association and the Washington Area Secular Humanists launched a website calling all from “the community of reason” to celebrate inclusive reason on the same day as the exclusive National Day of Prayer. They argue on their About page that the National Day of Prayer violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution as it sets aside tax dollars to support religion.

Stark also spoke at the Reason Rally, which drew about 20,000 atheists to the National Mall in March.....snip~

Congressman Pete Stark calls for National Day of Reason instead of prayer - San Francisco apologetics | Examiner.com

So today Stark brought out his Day of Reason on the House Floor. What is your thoughts concerning the Day of Prayer being set by Congress and those That say it is Unconstitutional and that the Day should be called the Day of Reason?

Also the Mayor of North Carolina that Obama wants to make as his Transportation Secretary jumped up into the Limelight.....by Declaring Today the Day of Reason as a Proclamation.
Almost all the religions I know of pray, some to god, some to may gods, some pray in homage, some to ancestors, and so on. Now what is reason or reasonable? What is reasonable to you may not be reasonable to me. I never thought of Pete Stark as being a reasonable guy, so his suggestion of a day of reason is very unreasonable to me.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

Oh, and if you still cannot see why he shouldn't be supporting one prayer type over another how would you feel if he said we would have a national prayer moment to pray to mecca 4 times a day? All of a sudden then we would be all about the first amendment.

if people want to pray or not it is up to them, but our government should not be getting into the act and having a nationally sponsored day of prayer. Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion. They cannot tell you not to pray or what to pray to, but they also cannot tell you to pray aty all because it violates the first amendment. Funny how few of the constitution lovers seem to find this offensive.
He's a christian, of course he'd endorse a day of prayer. It's not against the law or unethical for a president to endorse this. Please stop, this is just a stupid thing to whine about.

In other words, get over yourself, it's not something to get bent over about. No one is being forced into praying.
