Italy isn't like most of Western Europe when it comes to views on criminals. Italy's views on inmate treatment probably match closer to Greece/Turkey & Middle Eastern treatments. So while I wouldn't go out and support her claims, I really don't see Italians as being the most caring with their inmates.

Given that different end goal it would seem that the Italians may well be doing the right thing.

She changed her story on numerous occasion and now she is writing a book which conflicts with what she orginally said about her treatment in prison! I mean its not like she could make more money by changing the story because I mean everyone wants to read abut how lovely her prison guards were and how uneventful her stay was in prison.....
