President Obama Honors Those Lost and Injured in West, Texas Explosion

    April 25, 2013 at 06:15 PM EDT

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama attend a memorial service at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, for victims killed last week at a fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, April 25, 2013.

    *snip*

“But today I see in the people of West, in your eyes, that what makes West special isn't going to go away. And instead of changing who you are, this tragedy has simply revealed who you’ve always been.”

I live in west Texas (not where this occurred). Props to the President for attending this service. Given all that was going on, I think he would have been justified in sending some official instead of going himself. That he didn't do that was a class move, IMO.

From one West Texan, sincere thanks, Mr. President.

I'm glad the President attended too. In the midst of this tragedy, I appreciate very much his dignifying the occasion with his presence and, really, speaking for the nation in this way.

A stroke of good timing, though, that he was already going to be in Dallas for the dedication of the Bush Library.

BTW, even though I've been to the West-Fest several times and my BFF's hubs is from Big Spring, every time I heard a news report, I heard "West Texas" rather than "West, Texas." I wonder how many folks were confused by this.

One has to question Obama's motives when he appears at the site of a mere industrial accident, in a state that has no safeguards to speak of..................

Oh, come on. Texas has zero any type of protection and regulation about anything. It was like an industrial mishap in Nigeria, for Christ sake..................

I don't question his motives at all and am not sure why anybody else would either. His presence meant a lot to the folks in West and to all the firefighters too. I'm just grateful that a long-planned event put him in the right place to do exactly the right thing a President should do if he or she is able. (I mean, I don't think we should expect any President to be daily be the Mourner-in-Chief.)
