The U.S. Military has blocked access to the Southern Baptist Convention’s website on an unknown number of military bases because it contains “hostile content” -- just weeks after an Army briefing labeled Evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics as examples of religious extremism, Fox News has learned.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the nation’s largest Protestant denomination known for its support of the pro-life movement and its strong belief in traditional marriage.

Southern Baptist chaplains reported that SBC.net had been blocked at military installations around the nation. The censorship was made public after an Army officer tried to log onto the denomination’s website and instead -- received a warning message.

“The site you have requested has been blocked by Team CONUS (C-TNOSC/RCERT-CONUS) due to hostile content,” the message read.

Team CONUS protects the computer network of the Dept. of Defense. The SBC's website was not blocked at the Pentagon.

The Dept. of Defense confirmed to Fox News late Wednesday that the SBC website had been blocked--but not intentionally.

“The Department of Defense is not intentionally blocking access to this site, said Lt. Col. Damien Pickart. “We are working diligently to investigate what might be causing access issues for some of our service members and to correct the situation as quickly as possible.”

The AFA sent out an action alert urging its members to contact the Pentagon and ask them to “stop the military’s alarming trend of hostility towards faith and religious freedom in our military.”.....snip~

When you're in the military, you sign up for some of your freedoms to be limited. It's actually pretty common for employers to do that. Mine, for example, blocks anything about alcohol or tobacco.

What does the military personnel need to access on the SBC website with military computers? Does this affect their ability to do their job? If not, they don't need access to the website.

What about when their off duty? They aren't restricted from using the Military's Website with all they carry. Some may even have classes thru their website.

The military blocks all sorts of sites in DISA’s niprnet. Use of a government computer and/or system is suppose to be for official business although due to health and morale of the troops, one can access virtually most sites.

Every so often DISA goes on the rag and blocks a lot of sites, but slowly most if not all come back. I can remember DISA even blocking the AKO site, that is the army’s knowledge online site which we did mandatory classes on. I do not know the reasons or the why fors, but stuff like this happens or in my case, happened all the time. Most of the time it was just pure silliness. I wouldn’t read much into it.

They should be using personal computer when they are off duty.

. Thoughts?

I wonder if there's a SPLC connection ?

It's not uncommon for some websites being blocked when using military computers. I've experienced that in the past.

About a year ago over on the Politico community forum there was one member who is a civilian working on some military projects and one day they blocked access to the Politico website. He sent me an e-mail saying that he probably wont be participating that much on the Politico as much because he can only do it from home.

I remember about ten years ago on one military installation where any website that was labeled by the SPLC as a hate organization was blocked. I think the base CO was a liberal. When she was transferred to a new command you were able to access all of the websites that use to be blocked.

Not this conspiracy theory again. It was one class by one Reserve unit. Try again.

A) unless that Officer is a chaplain, he doesn't need to be dicking around on a company computer, looking up crap that doesn't involve military business. B) The Army isn't prohibiting anyone's ability to practice their religion. A soldier wants to look up a pastor, priest, rabbi, imam, whatever, they can do it on their own time on their device.

This is a whole lot of nothing being turned into a huge something by manipulating the truth in the most dishonest way possible.

Spirituality (of all kinds) is promoted as a key platform of the Master Resiliency Training Program and resiliency campuses across the DoD. The MRT program was designed by U-Penn and has been in place for about 4 years now. It recognizes the connection of resiliency to equal healthy components of mind, body, and spirituality. Accessing religious websites even during duty hours would not be inappropriate.

In certain instances, yes. But whenever, willy nilly, no.

Do people seriously think websites are specifically blocked on a site by site basis? The government uses filters to block. So, obviously, something on the SBC site triggered the block. I've had parts of snopes.com blocked on govt websites.

It says quite clearly the website was not meant to be blocked, where's the issue?

In certain instances, yes. But whenever, willy nilly, no.
The "willy nilly nature" of the access isnt in evidence or question. The OP was not citing that between 1400 and 1500z some soldier attempted to access the website. The OP was pointing out that the website had been blocked and its content determined by someone to be 'hostile'.

The AFA sent out an action alert urging its members to contact the Pentagon and ask them to “stop the military’s alarming trend of hostility towards faith and religious freedom in our military.”

Most disturbing to him (the Army officer) was the fact that the military labeled his personal religious faith as ‘hostile’ to the U.S. Army,” AFA spokesman Randy Sharp told Fox News.

Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance, told Fox News that Southern Baptist chaplains on military bases around the world have been unable to access the website.

Richard Land, president of the SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission denounced the censorship and demanded that Southern Baptist soldiers be provided access to the site.

Land said the military censorship was part of a “disturbing trend.”

“With Internet technology constantly evolving, the Department is working to ensure that service members have access to an open Internet while preserving information and operational security,” he said.

Religious liberty groups were outraged by the block and called for an immediate investigation

“This is another example of the growing hostility toward evangelical Christians in the armed forces,” Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jerry Boykin, executive vice president of the Family Research Council told Fox News. “Ironically, the very people who are sworn to support and defend the rights provided in the U.S. Constitution are being denied the right to exercise those rights individually."

The American Family Association feared it was further evidence of what they called religious hostility within the Pentagon.

“This is one more example of the Defense Department leadership allowing hostility towards faith and religious freedom in our military,” Sharp told Fox News. “The growing list of offenses is overwhelming and Secretary Chuck Hagel should no longer ignore it.”

In recent days, the Army has come under fire after an officer sent an email to subordinates labeling the AFA and the Family Research Council as “domestic hate groups.”

In another incident a group of Army Reservists were told that Evangelical Christians and Catholics are examples of religious extremists.....snip~

I guess the AFA and ALL those Religious groups see this as an issue then made it an issue.....along with that service member. Do you think they have an issue? Why did they press on after the explanation of.....it wasn't being blocked? Do you think it could have to do with all those Chaplains?

The AFA is a hate group in my opinion, what their opinion are should have no bearing on anything the military does. A hate group you say? Yes because of things like this:

The AFA thinks no permits should be given for any mosques anywhere in America:
No more mosques, period - RIGHTLYCONCERNED.COM
Muslims “must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions...It is a Muslim’s destiny to perform Jihad and work wherever he is and wherever he lands until the final hour comes, and there is no escape from that destiny...”

Because of this subversive ideology, Muslims cannot claim religious freedom protections under the First Amendment. They are currently using First Amendment freedoms to make plans to destroy the First Amendment altogether. There is no such thing as freedom of religion in Islam, and it is sheer and utter folly for Americans to delude themselves into thinking otherwise.

Homosexuals caused the Holocaust:
Homosexuality, Hitler and 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' - RIGHTLYCONCERNED.COM

Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and six million dead Jews. Gays in the military is an experiment that has been tried and found disastrously and tragically wanting. Maybe it's time for Congress to learn a lesson from history.

Barack Obama is the Antichrist

Okay what does that have to do with the other religious groups? What does that have to do with the Chaplains who require use of such?

What about the Family Resarch Council and a Retired Lt General speaking out? Also I am sure they have Extreme membership in their ranks. What would that have to do with the rest of the AFA?

Is that really relevant to the point? First it was he shouldnt be going there on a gov computer, then it shouldnt matter because he or she should have other ways....all the while...nothing about the stupidity of blocking a site for 'hostile content' which is what the thread is about.

Stop it. Faux has an outrage a day to keep you guys fired up and not thinking. I cant answer for the left but in my opinion Faux is silly and you guys fall for it time after time.
