The U.S. Military has blocked access to the Southern Baptist Convention’s website on an unknown number of military bases because it contains “hostile content” -- just weeks after an Army briefing labeled Evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics as examples of religious extremism, Fox News has learned.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the nation’s largest Protestant denomination known for its support of the pro-life movement and its strong belief in traditional marriage.

Southern Baptist chaplains reported that SBC.net had been blocked at military installations around the nation. The censorship was made public after an Army officer tried to log onto the denomination’s website and instead -- received a warning message.

“The site you have requested has been blocked by Team CONUS (C-TNOSC/RCERT-CONUS) due to hostile content,” the message read.

Team CONUS protects the computer network of the Dept. of Defense. The SBC's website was not blocked at the Pentagon.

The Dept. of Defense confirmed to Fox News late Wednesday that the SBC website had been blocked--but not intentionally.

“The Department of Defense is not intentionally blocking access to this site, said Lt. Col. Damien Pickart. “We are working diligently to investigate what might be causing access issues for some of our service members and to correct the situation as quickly as possible.”

The AFA sent out an action alert urging its members to contact the Pentagon and ask them to “stop the military’s alarming trend of hostility towards faith and religious freedom in our military.”.....snip~

What does the military personnel need to access on the SBC website with military computers? Does this affect their ability to do their job? If not, they don't need access to the website.

When you're in the military, you sign up for some of your freedoms to be limited. It's actually pretty common for employers to do that. Mine, for example, blocks anything about alcohol or tobacco. :shrug:

What about when their off duty? They aren't restricted from using the Military's Website with all they carry. Some may even have classes thru their website.

The military blocks all sorts of sites in DISA’s niprnet. Use of a government computer and/or system is suppose to be for official business although due to health and morale of the troops, one can access virtually most sites.

Every so often DISA goes on the rag and blocks a lot of sites, but slowly most if not all come back. I can remember DISA even blocking the AKO site, that is the army’s knowledge online site which we did mandatory classes on. I do not know the reasons or the why fors, but stuff like this happens or in my case, happened all the time. Most of the time it was just pure silliness. I wouldn’t read much into it.

It's not uncommon for some websites being blocked when using military computers. I've experienced that in the past.

About a year ago over on the Politico community forum there was one member who is a civilian working on some military projects and one day they blocked access to the Politico website. He sent me an e-mail saying that he probably wont be participating that much on the Politico as much because he can only do it from home.

I remember about ten years ago on one military installation where any website that was labeled by the SPLC as a hate organization was blocked. I think the base CO was a liberal. When she was transferred to a new command you were able to access all of the websites that use to be blocked.

A) unless that Officer is a chaplain, he doesn't need to be dicking around on a company computer, looking up crap that doesn't involve military business. B) The Army isn't prohibiting anyone's ability to practice their religion. A soldier wants to look up a pastor, priest, rabbi, imam, whatever, they can do it on their own time on their device.

Spirituality (of all kinds) is promoted as a key platform of the Master Resiliency Training Program and resiliency campuses across the DoD. The MRT program was designed by U-Penn and has been in place for about 4 years now. It recognizes the connection of resiliency to equal healthy components of mind, body, and spirituality. Accessing religious websites even during duty hours would not be inappropriate.

Do people seriously think websites are specifically blocked on a site by site basis? The government uses filters to block. So, obviously, something on the SBC site triggered the block. I've had parts of snopes.com blocked on govt websites.

The "willy nilly nature" of the access isnt in evidence or question. The OP was not citing that between 1400 and 1500z some soldier attempted to access the website. The OP was pointing out that the website had been blocked and its content determined by someone to be 'hostile'.

The AFA is a hate group in my opinion, what their opinion are should have no bearing on anything the military does. A hate group you say? Yes because of things like this:

That's why they said it shouldn't have been blocked in the first place and I'm assuming now its unblocked, there's really no issue here. I'll tell you what when I go to work tomorrow and try to go to that website I'll let yo know what I find.
