Catherine, Herbert Schaible's Second Child Dies After Parents Use Prayer, No Medicine

I hope that these parents pay for their phony religious beliefs. I mean, how can you not take your child to the doctor for medical treatment?
    This is their second death.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) A couple serving probation for the 2009 death of their toddler after they turned to prayer instead of a doctor could face new charges now that another son has died.
Herbert and Catherine Schaible belong to a fundamentalist Christian church that believes in faith healing. They lost their 8-month-old son, Brandon, last week after he suffered from diarrhea and breathing problems for at least a week, and stopped eating. Four years ago, another son died from bacterial pneumonia.
Prosecutors said Tuesday that a decision on charges will be made after they get the results of an autopsy.
Catherine Schaible's attorney, Mythri Jayaraman, cautioned against a rush to judgment, and said the couple are good parents deeply distraught over the loss of another child.

I think I'll rush to judgement anyway and call these people murderers.

They were already on probation from the first death, and were required to take their surviving children for regular checkups, which they failed to do. Lock them up, and the rest of the kids might live to adulthood.
Eternity is an awfully long time, especially towards the end.

I disagree with their belief against medical treatment, but it isn't my place to tell them what to believe.

The argument on whether to allow them to deny medical treatement to their child is a more sticky problem. I have some sympathy for them, but a child dying from something that could probably have been readily cured by modern medicine is pretty appalling. If the child was old enough to articulate whether he wished to adhere to his parent's beliefs of be treated, that would be a bit different, but in both cases they were too young to do so.

While I am very reluctant to let the State intervene in the parent-child relationship, it can be argued that this amounts to negligence at least.

I feel the same way about people who avoid doctors due to a belief that herbs, "holistic" medicine and/or shamanistic practices, acupuncture, whatever... are their preferred treatment... if that's what they want to do as an adult fine, but I have deep reservations about letting a child die for their parent's seemingly irrational beliefs.

It seems a little odd, even suspicious, that they managed to lose TWO small children in four years time, even WITHOUT a doctor... I mean in my family we don't run to the doc for every little thing but losing two in four years seems like either mighty bad luck or suspiciously bad luck...

Theoretically, shouldn't evolution have weeded these nutcases out?
Either 'social justice' has the same meaning as 'justice' or not. If so why use the additional word 'social?' We lose time, we destroy trees to obtain paper necessary to print this word. If not, if 'social justice' means something different from 'justice' then 'something different from justice' is by definition 'injustice' -Janusz Korwin-Mikke

Prison time. They are disgusting human beings.

There once was a man who believed in God. He had a home in a small town and he prayed everyday. One day it started to rain, and rain. It rained so much and so hard that the town began to flood, all of the man’s neighbors began to pack up their stuff, and the man began to pray. He prayed for God to save him.
As the man’s house began to fill with water he moved to higher ground in his loft, and he prayed for God to save him.

Not too much later his neighbor rowed over in a boat and pleaded for the man to leave his house and get in the boat. However, the man refused to leave his home. He said, “I have been praying, and I have faith that God will save me.” So his neighbor left.

Soon the water began to fill the loft, so the man moved to higher ground on his roof and he prayed for God to save him.

Not too much later, he saw a raft floating near by. The people in the raft begged him to join them, so that they may find safety together. Again the man refused to leave his home. He said, “I have been praying, and I have faith that God will save me.” So the people left.

Soon the water began to cover the rooftop, and the man had no place left to go, so he prayed and he prayed. Suddenly he heard a helicopter, and saw a long rope ladder in front of him. “Grab on someone yelled, we will save you!” But again the man refused. He said, “I have been praying, and I have faith that God will save me.”

Well needless to say that stubborn man drowned.

When he reached heaven he was very disappointed with God. He asked “Father I just can’t understand, I prayed and prayed, and I had constant faith in you. Why didn’t you save me?” The Lord replied, “My child, I sent you a boat, a raft, and even a helicopter. I tried to save you, it was you who refused to be saved.”
And many of you are saying, "Yeah, yeah, I've read it before." Well, as ridiculously obvious as this parable is? Two children are dead because their rock-head parents didn't get it.

Jail time. I have no sympathy for them at all.

More like religious fanatics, this is hardly an uncommon thing. It's disgusting that we allow these people to get away with murder because it's under the umbrella of religion.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

You can question their sanity but you can't question their beliefs. They certainly believe - unfortunately.
