Canada thwarts "al Qaeda-supported" passenger train plot

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian police said on Monday they had arrested and charged two men with an "al Qaeda-supported" plot to derail a passenger train.

"Had this plot been carried out, it would have resulted in innocent people being killed or seriously injured," Royal Canadian Mounted Police official James Malizia told reporters in Toronto.

The RCMP said it had arrested Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 35, of Toronto in connection with the plot, which authorities said was not linked to the Boston Marathon bombings, but likely had connections to al-Qaeda.

Good for our Canadian friends up North.

Any additional information from our Canadian members?

It's been on the news here all day and has been reported on CNN as well but it is only one of many plots our RCMP and CSIS have uncovered and stopped. Most of these don't see wide publication until such time as the trials commence.

It appears US Homeland Security was notified and involved as well. While it's not always well known or appreciated, Canada and the US work very well together in many areas, particularly in this area.

As gabriel Heatter used to say on the radio....... "there is good news tonight!"

Fantastic work on the RCMP and CSIS' parts. A derailed train is more potential for death and destruction than a IED will ever have.

We gladly ridicule ourselves on a regular basis - it's very good for what ails you.

I thought it was hilarious so I decided to ignore the fact that it has nothing to do with the topic other than Go Canada huzzah.
