How a Stupid Mistake Led Police Straight to the Boston Terrorists

Among the many mysteries lingering over last week’s horrors in Boston is this one: How did the Tsarnaev brothers allow the man they carjacked on Thursday night to get away? The release or escape–it’s unclear which is the case–of a person to whom they had identified themselves immediately put the police hot on their trail. For Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, it was a colossal error. For the rest of the world, it was a crucial development that led to their capture and may have saved numerous lives.

So I guess, TIME's message to up-and-coming terrorists is to make sure you kill everyone you come in contact with so you'll have a better chance to evade authorities.

Way to take that out of context!

Oh brother, did you read the article?

The article is poorly written for sure. It comes off as insensitive and sarcastic, which is completely inappropriate given the gravity of the situation. Nevertheless, I think the main point of the article is that terrorists often make mistakes that lead to their capture, which prevents further lives from being endangered. I don't think the intention of the article was to appear as a terrorist advice column.

Every criminal makes mistakes - that's how we catch them and find out they're criminals.

If, for some unknown reason, these two criminals showed mercy on the SUV owner, I wouldn't necessarily call that stupid but perhaps a form of devine intervention or the concept that even in the most evil of hearts and minds, some goodness must exist.

Preparing for this took time, some money and some serious planning. So, the utter absence of an escape plan is rather mystifying.

As CanadaJohn pointed out, most criminals are very stupid. That's why they get caught.

I look at the precise and instant media coverage we got on this event as providing an excellent template for future bombers/terrorists on what not to do. This is just another in a series of those.

I think it was in Crime and Punishment, the quote is something like ~"In every crime/murder one makes at least 12 mistakes, a genius is aware of one". The more common quote from C&P is ~"14 or 114" and without the mention of being aware of the mistakes.

My C&P quote search failed. Perhaps it's Niet or Mach, quoted in C&P. T'was to do with the burying of the hatchet.

They were identified from surveilance photo's released about 80 hours after the bombing, allowing for ample time to escape the area, should that have been their intention. IMHO, these morons expected not to be noticed as "out of place" since they lived only a short distance from the bombing site, thus they had no plan B. The carjacking occured after their photos were aired, so their identities were already known, just not their immediate location.

The biggest mystery, to me, is why, after having been interviewed by the FBI in 2011, they were not in a criminal/immigrant database that could be quickly matched by using face recognition software. Had this been done then they would not have been tipped off by publishing their photo's (simply to get an ID), as their names (last address and known associates?) would have been known.

Good question.
Perhaps it was done and the photos were of too poor quality.

Some folks who knew them said they saw a similarity but didn't call the authorities. Amazing.

Yep. Not that hard to start searching for viable suspects by careful examination of known, to the FBI, Jihadists in the Boston area. ;)

Terrorists are dumb asses. One blew himself up in Israel a few years back because he didn't change his clock due to Daylight savings.
