The only appropriate answer is: "That's not a State issue. That's a local issue. It's none of the State's business." An answer which would be played as ignoring an issue instead of simply limiting State power and Involvement appropriately.

On the contrary. The appropriate issue response would be "the issue is outside my role as governor, but I support the prom on a moral level as an individual who opposes segregation."

This is the elephant in the room that the conservatives here don't want to address, so as usual they deflect.

2013 and still trying to figure if we should desegregate. Amazing but not surprizing.

As An elected official you should always be separating his personal opinions from his official statements. His personal opinion should never be part of an official statement.

I'm not sure I understand the point here

To me the elephant is that the governor should morally stand up against these antiquated laws! In fact, he should apologize for the state having them in the first place!

A mixed couple going to a prom should not be news anywhere today.

While I agree, he's still a politician. Though as far as things go, this is a particularly bad example of someone catering to political interests

I'm not sure it's something he had much control over or knowledge of. I mean, it's not like he, or any other governor, is organizing fact finding committees to deduce the state of georgia's proms

I agree, but I haven't seen anyone claim that the policy should stand. In fact, I'm sure most people are assuming it's an obvious concession that needs to be made

There are no "laws" at play here, "antiquated" or otherwise.

Preventing racial discrimination is not a personal opinion, its part of his role as governor. The fact that he cannot legally intervene in no way prevents him from making public statement to provide leadership on the issue. Its especially important given Georgia's history that he sets a strong example about how the government will no longer tolerate this kind of behavior.
