Harvard Study: Gun Control Is Counterproductive
Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?
A Review of International and Some Domestic Evidence.
Din B. Kates* and Gary Mauser**

The study, which just appeared in Volume 30, Number 2 of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy (pp. 649-694), set out to answer the question in its title: "Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide? A Review of International and Some Domestic Evidence." Contrary to conventional wisdom, and the sniffs of our more sophisticated and generally anti-gun counterparts across the pond, the answer is "no." And not just no, as in there is no correlation between gun ownership and violent crime, but an emphatic no, showing a negative correlation: as gun ownership increases, murder and suicide decreases.

The findings of two criminologists - Prof. Don Kates and Prof. Gary Mauser - in their exhaustive study of American and European gun laws and violence rates, are telling:
Nations with stringent anti-gun laws generally have substantially higher murder rates than those that do not. The study found that the nine European nations with the lowest rates of gun ownership (5,000 or fewer guns per 100,000 population) have a combined murder rate three times higher than that of the nine nations with the highest rates of gun ownership (at least 15,000 guns per 100,000 population)

    EDITORIAL: Guns decrease murder rates
In Washington, the best defense is self-defense
    By THE WASHINGTON TIMES

More guns in law-abiding hands mean less crime. The District of Columbia proves the point.

    <snip>
Few who lived in Washington during the 1970s can forget the upswing in crime that started right after the ban was originally passed. In the five years before the 1977 ban, the murder rate fell from 37 to 27 murders per 100,000. In the five years after the gun ban went into effect, the murder rate rose back up to 35. One fact is particularly hard to ignore: D.C.'s murder rate fluctuated after 1976 but only once fell below what it was in 1976 before the ban. That aberration happened years later, in 1985.

This correlation between the D.C. gun ban and diminished safety was not a coincidence. Look at the Windy City. Immediately after Chicago banned handguns in 1982, the murder rate, which had been falling almost continually for a decade, started to rise. Chicago's murder rate rose relative to other large cities as well. The phenomenon of higher murder rates after gun bans are passed is not just limited to the United States. Every single time a country has passed a gun ban, its murder rate soared.

Even Australia's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research acknowledges that the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime:
    • In 2006, assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.
    • Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.
    • Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.

Moreover, Australia and the United States -- where no gun-ban exists -- both experienced similar decreases in murder rates:
    • Between 1995 and 2007, Australia saw a 31.9 percent decrease; without a gun ban, America's rate dropped 31.7 percent.
    • During the same time period, all other violent crime indices increased in Australia: assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.
    • Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.
    • Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.
    • At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased 31.8 percent: rape dropped 19.2 percent; robbery decreased 33.2 percent; aggravated assault dropped 32.2 percent.
    • Australian women are now raped over three times as often as American women.

    ......
The public's perception is that violence is increasing, but trends in violent crime reported to police since the early 1990s reveal a mixed story. Homicide has decreased by nine percent since 1990 and armed robbery by one-third since 2001, but recorded assaults and sexual assaults have both increased steadily in the past 10 years by over 40 percent and 20 percent respectively. The rate of aggravated assault appears to have contributed to the marked rise in recorded assault, and for both assault and sexual assault the rate of increase was greater for children aged under 15 years, with increases almost double that of the older age group. Neither population changes among young adult males nor rates of offending seem to explain the trends in recorded violent crime, and indicators of change in reporting to police provide only a partial explanation. Based on self-reported victimisation and reporting to police, it would seem increased reporting of assault is somewhat responsible for the rise in recorded assault rates against adult victims. However, victimisation survey data suggest there has been little change in rates of sexual assault, although reporting to police by women seems to have increased. Victimisation survey data also do not illuminate the most significant recorded increase in violent victimisation, against children, as they are collected less frequently and only apply to those aged at least over 15 years. The paper speculates that the rise could be due to better public understanding of child protection issues and increased reporting due to public awareness of what constitutes physical and sexual assault - especially within the family - but this requires further investigation to examine how many recorded violent crimes against children relate to current and/or past events and of the relationship to the offender.

We can play this game all day long. By the way, I noticed your information always seemed to stop at around 2007. Do you have anything up to 2011 or 2012?

Assaults have gone up, but every other violent crime has either stayed roughly the same or dropped. And any other crime besides violent crime in Australia isn't really relevant.

No one expects you to take your robotic focus off guns, because we all know it isn't people's safety that drives you....but pure power. The knife example is merely to demonstrate the total silliness of your gun control policies and the hypocrisy of your agenda.

Have we made it all the way to ridicule to try and shame conservatives out of arguing already? That's a sure sign you've run out of arguments. Thing is that only works when your argument has any value and yours doesn't. If you honestly (and that would be a stretch given your ideology) think conservatives don't love their children there is nothing you can say that holds any water. Sadly you have just earned a spot on the bench next to Head of Jackass and Tedorunrun. Goodbye.

in this thread I have seen AIDS and abortion being used as reason why Guns shouldn't be banned, talk about scraping the barrel.

actually the point is valid. anti gunners (almost always left wing) claim that the actions of millions need to be restricted in order to stop a few criminals. This suggestion is easy when those proposing restrictions find no inherent merit or value in law abiding people owning or using firearms for ANY reason. So I turn it back to AIDS-a scourge that has killed more people than privately owned firearms through homicide in the last three decades. Many conservatives find no inherent value to sodomy among males so why not ban such activity in the hope it will stop the spread of AIDS?

same argument as the anti gun position
