(CNSNews.com) - The number of American workers collecting federal disability payments climbed to yet another record of 8,853,614 in March, up from 8,840,427 in February, according to newly released data from the Social Security Administration.

That means there are more than 3 times as many Americans taking disability payments as there are people living in the city of Chicago, which according to the Census Bureau has a population of 2,707,120.

There were two guys in my local coffee shop this morning from Illinois, both on disability headed out to go fishing in a 50K dollar boat. Boy, being on disability must be rough.

So you just go around asking random people if they are on disability and going fishing?

The best federal entitlement of all time! One of the few that requires no dependent, includes automatic pay raises and is rarely reviewed. You may also get to park up front at stores too. There are law firms (Binder & Binder is one) that will hook you up with "professional" disability doctors to assert your malady in legal terms, their legal fees are now capped at $5,000 (or 25%, whichever is less) and are only assessed if (when?) you finally win. SSDI benefits are paid from the date of initial SSDI application. Odds are WAY better than the lottery!

We get paid only when we win your case and our fees are closely regulated by the government.

Don't you dare be mean to me! It may upset me so much that I may become disabled. How would that make you feel, having been the cause of my getting "access to" a portion of your paycheck for life? ;)

After my mortgage is paid, hell I may join you, it is sickening to watch a large portion of people essentially retiring in their 30's and 40's to live on the taxpayer dime

Oh yeah, because i know most people on disability are really damned proud of being there. Seems like a big fish story to me. Get it fishermen and big fish story.

or a story about naive people in your case, get it? or do you need more explanation?

I am now 59, and very seriously considering that "option". SSDI pays the same benefit amount as if I waited until age 68 to start drawing my normal SS benefit, so it is not a bad plan to at least try that route, otherwise I can take a 75% SS benefit at age 62. Once you get on SS it is hard (impossible?) to get declared disabled. The older you are, and the lower your educational level, the easier it is to qualify for SSDI. Not many past age 60 can get/keep doing framing carpentry jobs or even doing landscaping work. Once you are out of work for a year (fairly easy to do with the recent UI extensions) it simply requires finding a doctor to say that you are unfit for your currrent kind of work, then the SS disability "hearing" folks must decide that based upon your age/education that retraining is not a viable option to seek a different "carreer" - then you "win" approval.

Yea, they should be euthanized right? instead of being a burden on society!...

The point is that they aren't really disabled.

Technically, I qualify for disability, and there is nothing wrong with me.

70% of individuals receiving disability are over the age of 50.

About 2.5 million individuals receive disability under the age of 50.

The highest percentage of individuals receiving disabilities are (West Virginia 9% of the pop, Alabama 8% of the pop, Kentucky 8% of the pop, Arkansas 8% of the pop, Mississippi 7.7% of the pop).

I think it's worth pointing out the states because those are poorer states with more individuals working in blue collar jobs. The average nation wide as a % of total individuals from ages 18-64 is about 4.6%.

I always have to laugh when I'm searching the TV for something to watch and I happen onto Judge Judy and she's got someone in the court who's on disability and she cracks about them not looking too disabled to flip burgers.

I would never begrudge any individual who is truly disabled whether prior to becoming employment aged or who became disabled on the job or through illness, but you have to wonder what's wrong with America if almost 9 million people have legitimate disabilities.

California has over 500 million with almost 200 million of it being mental, how odd, isn't that a liberal state? is it coincidence?
