I asked you to show me large numbers of people on disability don't qualify to be on it, at no point did I imply there is no fraud.

Really, when one doesn't have an argument outside his outrage at imagined faceless masses leeching off the system, one should at least find evidence that such feelings are based in reality.

This subject seems to be making the rounds on right wing sites.

Are people gaming the system? Oh, yeah. More than before? Difficult to say.

People with disabilities have always had a tremendously difficult time finding employment or equal employment for jobs in which they are equally qualified. I don't believe anyone would dispute that. In hard times people with disabilities are more likely to get the ax. In hard times it is even more difficult than it usually is for people with disabilities to find employment.

More than a few former employees who have lost their jobs, are looking for any gainful employment these days. In their previous job people with disabilities probably were working in positions that were negatively impacted by their disability. Now, that they are looking for work it is not as easy finding that niche in a new job possibility.

America is older. A lot of people who had planned to retire cannot. If you live long enough you are going to have a disability. People don't plan for that. We all know that many companies let older workers go over younger workers because the older workers have better benefits and higher salaries. This practice has put a quite a number of older workers, many who have acquired age related disabilities, out of work. Try finding a gainful job in a hard recession when you are over 50, disabled, female and non-white. I can't imagine how tough that is.

Yeah, disability claims are up and it is not surprising at all. Given the demographics and the economy we should be surprised if the numbers didn't go up! Are people gaming the system? Sure. Probably not as much as you think, however.
