Here’s what Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) had to say on the efficacy of banning high capacity magazines:

I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now they're going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available

Surely nobody crafting gun-control legislation could be THAT stupid. And not the primary sponsor on the legislative effort to ban these magazines. Thankfully, her office was able to clarify the remark, assuring all concerned that DeGette had studied the issue for many years and apparently just misspoke.

She meant to say "clips" not "magazines":

"The Congresswoman has been working on a high-capacity assault magazine ban for years, and has been deeply involved in the issue; she simply misspoke in referring to 'magazines' when she should have referred to 'clips,' which cannot be reused because they don’t have a feeding mechanism," Johnson said. "Quite frankly, this is just another example of opponents of common-sense gun violence prevention trying to manipulate the facts"

Let's all put our faith back into government. This was just another example of gun owners’ stunning lack of common sense and distortion of the "facts". I'm sure a clarification on the earlier clarification is forthcoming.:3oops:

Diana DeGette Draws Ire Of Gun Advocates Who Call Gun Magazine Remarks 'Stupid'

Video:

That exchange was hilarious. The audience members laughing at her stupidity was even better.

They laugh even harder in another exchange where she tells a senior concerned about home intrusion that he's got nothing to worry about because the police would be there "within minutes"

To make matters worse, when the guy responds that he'd be dead by that time, she says "you'd probably be dead anyway."

(you have to go 30 seconds for her remarks)

What an idiot.
Why is this person allowed to craft legislation?

They may not let her use the crayons much, but she still has a voice (and vote) in the CO legislature. Not nearly as insane as NY, which says you can have 10 (to ??? grandfathered in) round magazines but may only put 7 rounds into them "legally". My pistol, a .380 w/15 round magazine(s), is still "legal" in CO but not in NY if simply loaded as intended. What has yet to be explained is how anyone, traveling accross the country, is expected to comply with gun laws as they cross state/county/city lines - since each may have their own unique view of what the 2A "really" means.

Typical mindless ****head. She truly doesn't even understand what she is trying to ban. As for her comments on police response...another one of those times when if you only have seconds, they assure you, 'help' will be there in 'minutes'. Kinda like that timely police response in Sandy Hook. Minutes. Just 10 of them.

Exactly what went through my head when I heard that.

"Qualified" to serve in goverment. How many empty headed elected/appointed officials in your lifetime have proven beyond question they are at best, lost and incompetent? Mindless liberals so disillusioned and doing nothing to improve their expertise as long as they are permitted to say something on a subject removing all doubt they are in fact stupid.

Someone should explain it to her. Many of us have noted the anti-gun folks often have no clue what they are talking about, so the solution to that is education.

Most people who oppose guns are just afraid of them. The NRA should attempt to educate these people instead of the constant polotical battle and trying to be an even more powerful lobby. If they (the antigun) understand firearms and how safely they can be used and are merely another tool used to make the world a bit safer for the good guys, their opinions might/would change. The way we are doing it now we just become entrenched in our opinions and nothing changes, and the NRA constantly money raises,

I'm afraid flaming libs dont want to be educated !!

Might be wrong but I doubt it.:twocents:

Yeah, it is stupid, but it is not akin stupid. It is not the uterus filters HIV so straight sex won't get you infected stupid. But it is in there with stupid. Give her a little time and some severe brain damage and she might be the next michelle bachman.

So she doesn't know the difference between a magazine and a clip. It isn't like this effects the health of the people involved like when they try to ban things like birth control which is used to fight things like ovarian cysts. This is not destroying our children's knowledge of science by forcing them to learn creationism as a scientific idea. This is not outlawing abortion in the case of rape because a woman can just shut off her uterus if she doesn't want to have sex. Seriously, in the debate about homosexuality states have allowed people to make insane claims about disease, pedophelia, and besitiality without a shred of evidence or intelligence behind them.

For the gun owners, welcome to the club. No really welcome to the club of things that are stupid used against you. Now maybe you want to join the rest of us in somehow putting some minimum level of intelligence into the system. We have people who do not know the basics of economics making policies like trickle down BS. We have people who do not know basic biology making medical regulations. We have people who don't know facts about drugs making decisions on what we can put into our bodies. We have people who don't know science deciding what is a legitimate scientific idea and what has no scientific evidence at all. We have people signing laws into existence and i am pretty sure they can't read. So welcome to the club guys, and maybe you could help us out cleaning up some of the mess of stupid, or maybe you are just here complaining about your pet issue and really don't care about cleaning up the stupid because you like it, in which case you have made your own problem.

And apparently...

We have people who seem to think that this is the first time someone on the left has expressed ignorance on the topic of guns.

I know it is a bit rare considering they are normally pretty spot on. But despite the fact they seem to be right well more often than others you can still join the club.

I mean technically magazines eventually become unusable but I'm not sure that's quite on the timeframe this person is expecting!
