Idaho science teacher uses the word 'vagina' in sex ed lesson, gets investigated | The Daily Caller

The state of Idaho’s professional-standards commission is investigating a science teacher in the tiny, rural town of Dietrich, because four parents have objected to his use of the word “vagina” in a 10th-grade biology lesson on human reproduction.
In addition to saying “vagina,” McDaniel stands accused of describing the biological processes that lead to a human orgasm, discussing birth control, and telling unseemly jokes to his sophomore charges, reports the Times-News of nearby Twin Falls, Idaho.
The group of unnamed parents has also complained that there was an in-class video clip detailing genital herpes infection.
Still another complaint levied by the concerned parents is that McDaniel showed the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” in class. The parents say showing professional politician Al Gore’s agitprop on climate change amounts to endorsing a political candidate on school property.
A final claim by the irate parents — and arguably the most serious one — is that the science teacher revealed confidential student files to some unspecified person who is not a parent. No further information on this allegation appears to be available.

I guess that should be expected from a school in Idaho. The only claim that holds any water is if he revealed confidential student files.

yes, there are some people there who need investigating. Like the parents who are stupifying their children should be investigated by CPS. Complaining about the use of the word vagina is just completely insane. Seriously, if you want to kleep your kids from hearing the word vagina home school them and just finish the job on making them completely ignorant hicks. This is why parents have no place in deciding what is taught at school. There needs to be standards, and if parents don't want their kids living up to them we go back to the homeschooling option. All the other kids in class do not need to be made idiots because your child cannot hear the word vagina. If my kid was in that class and i found out some other parent wanted my kid to be stupid because their child cannot bear to hear the word vagina I would be launching my own complaint against the parents and the school if they were to jeopardize my child's education because of that BS.

actually, the teacher notified the students that biological reproduction was going to be taught
those students who believed they could not cope with that information were welcome to not attend those lectures

Wow, bitching about the use of the word Vagina is ridiculous. Like, laughable. What are they supposed to say in a health class.

That said, I can't help but notice this is a sterling example of what's wrong with media today. "Journalists" today look at a story and immedietely seek to find the way to present it that is most polarizing, most controversial, most sensational, or perhaps most in line with a particular agenda instead of looking at the facts of a story and attempting to put the most relevant and serious portions forward in a way that people can be made aware.

In this particular instance, I would think the issue of students confidential files being shown to sources without a need to know would be the FAR more important take away from this story. And yet that little snippet is kept as a throw away near the very end because the notion of "OMG! Parents mad that teacher said vagina" is likely to invoke far more page hits and controversy.

It's all about grabbing attention of the reader. Grabbing attention = money made.
 
Then why post it here?

I mean, what's the point? Every time someone posts a sensationalist story to DP, people come in and gawk, make their polarized remarks, and then leave. It's not the best for generating discussion.

to me, these stories represent the massive inanity to be found, here and abroad
keep em coming; those who don't like reading them can "simply" refuse to click the threads

There are a million good and bad things happening in the world every day and the media always focused on the bad. The wolf that wins is the one you feed.

The "American Taliban" shtick is ridiculous, old, and frankly insulting to the realities of what occured under that regime in Afghanistan.

I would love to tell you to, "Keep telling yourself that," but I won't . . . it is not proper in this case. However, I would like to say that we now have a teaching moment, just like the Jesus getting stomped on thread. Give an inch, and they take a mile. Open a sociological door and it never closes . . . please refer to gay marriage. Allow radical religious people to dictate the CANON . . . you get dumb Americans with a religious skew (see many in the modern GOP). Slippery Slope and all . . . it has to start somewhere. History is made up of moments in time. The Afghanistan of today does not resemble the Afghanistan of 1965, and there was a moment in time that allowed that transformation. Shirt happens. I am sorry you are insulted . . . I am sure it does not matter to you that in my secular nation, religious folk hold so much power. The Tea Party, and folks from the Religious Right control the primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire, and insult me with their nominees when I need a relevant candidate most.

You only need to look at the forum to know many would be glad to live under this kind of minimization of the real world, as well as science. I am truly sorry you (seriously, I like many of your posts and respect your intellect) feel insulted. However, I cannot help believing we could be one 9/11 away from a religious nut-bag running our nation. Let's call that my paranoid fear. Respect to you.

If the teacher misused the word vagina to refer to the vulva, as many people do, there would be a legitimate complaint. What is the religious conservative approved term for vagina, "down there?"
