The rant was written in response to the decision of a local school board to fire a lesbian teacher after the teacher accused the school board of trying to force students to drive her out. But the letter doesn't begin and end with lesbians; oh, no:

WCHS-TV reported on Wednesday that the Lincoln Journal had come under fire for printing a transcript of a reader’s voice mail comments in the “Gripe and Gratitudes” section of the paper.

The reader referenced a recent report about how the Lincoln County Board of Education had terminated lesbian teacher Kelli Burns from her job at Guyan Valley Middle School teacher after she accused board officials of forcing students to write complaints that she had tried to “turn them gay.”

“We were really glad to hear that School Board is getting rid of them queers,” the voice mail said. “The next thing is we need to get rid of all the n****rs, the sp*cs, the k*k*s and the w*ps.”

“You know even them Catholics, they are wrong as baby eaters,”
the reader continued. “We need to clear them people out and have good, white, God fearing Christians and everybody else needs to be put to death for their abominations.”

“We’ll keep Lincoln County white and right. Thank you.”

On the one hand, this sort of speech is obviously contemptible. On the other, I'm grateful to the Lincoln Journal for giving it the light of day. Only sunlight fumigates such bigotry.

As for myself, I'm sad to see this occurred in West Virginia. I've always had a soft spot for the State; it rejected the Confederacy for the Union, after all, and it saddens me to see that old Virginia is far more enlightened today than its spin-off State.

Unless the reader was on the school board, I don't see how his/her comments are relevant.

If s/he's a resident of the area under the school board's jurisdiction, we might well take these comments as accurately portraying the general feelings of his/her fellow-citizens.

Re: West Virginia paper publishes an incredibly bigoted screed from reader

Or someone could be trolling an entire town. And you.

Re: West Virginia paper publishes an incredibly bigoted screed from reader

A failure to post certain reader comments moves the paper into the area of only publishing comments that further an agenda. Like it or not, the main criteria for publishing a comment should be validity of thought.

How many times have each of us submitted a reader comment on a controversial subject only to have an immediate response of "Thank you, your comment has been submitted for review." Meaning, Agree with Us or you don't get to speak.

Those papers are then discarded as propaganda machines, not serious news sources.

At what point does 'trolling' become indistinguishable from simply voicing the collective opinions of a region?

From the article:

But other readers agreed with the bigoted opinion.

“I don’t have to read it all, I already agree with that,” Hamlin resident Leroy Ramey opined. “Get rid of them.”

Absolutely!

You might if you have an axe to grind or an agenda to promote.

It should really be no surprise to anyone that idiots can be found everywhere but it takes a special kind of hate filled mentality to apply the ranting of one person to an entire population.

That assumption is a can of worms I would warn you not to open.

When did newspapers start legitimizing bull****? There is no doubt in my mind that this was either someone mentally ill? Or someone pulling legs big time. Why the newspaper would stoop to printing it is beyond me. If this happened in my town, I would be furious.

No anonymous ****!!!!!

Sad that a teacher lost her job because of bigotry, sad to see that this **** still happens in America.

Or that of an angry gay man caricaturizing what he thinks the general feelings of the community are. Who knows?

Potentially, yes. However, the Paper's job itself should have been to remove such comments, as they can and will be numerous. Many other papers, including those in my area, constantly filter out individual comments as well as letters to the editor that will not be so bold in inciting hate speech across a group. A majority may have problems with that man's opinion, but many will not. Give the masses no excuse to consider this justifiable conversation.

So...censorship?

Sometimes you can put a really stupid statement between a couple of intelligent ones and the effect is to make the stupid one look more stupid and the intelligent ones look more intelligent.

You're not afraid of a little selectivity, are you?

Newspapers do it all the time. They even withhold regular columns deemed improper for the readership.

If I were the editor I wouldn't make such decisions a habit but I certainly wouldn't shy away from them from time to time. As far as I'm concerned it's a free speech thing and if I'm going to be in the journalism business then I may as well play the whole field.

It would behoove you to not turn off a large portion of your readership through one person's incredibly offensive rhetoric that has been labeled hate speech by most of society. One person's "free speech" costs you a public image, your readership, and thus your wallet. All because you wanted to entertain the thoughts of a hate-filled man who sent in a voice mail of no merit.

It appears that you have neglected to read anything I wrote or, if you did, your comprehension simply sucks.

I never cease to be amazed at how so many people seem to peruse a sentence or a paragraph and see only the words or phrases that they want to see while blotting out everything else.

To your point, yeah, some people will be just like you and be pissed off because that's what works for them...they LIKE to be pissed off. Others would look at the idiot letter and think to themselves "What an idiot. Good thing that there are more sane people than idiots out there as evidenced by the 4:1 ratio of sane letters to idiot letters."

Re: West Virginia paper publishes an incredibly bigoted screed from reader

I comprehended you quite fine. Journalism isn't entirely about being presented with everyone's point of view. It is also about controlling the message and the delivery of that message. The truth is, your approach isn't common at all in the industry, and for good reason.

I wouldn't be shocked if the intention of publishing those comments were actually to drive up publicity and boost sells. It is likely that more will now purchase it to see what nonsense is put in there rather than stop getting it due to those comments.

How do you know that's why she was fired? She might have been a crappy teacher. Perhaps she violated school board policy.

Throttle the victim train down a few notches.

I'm a Catholic and a Sicilian and I don't feel offended at all...

Why would I care what some misguided retard believes or thinks?

Honestly, I actually prefer Dago or Wop over "Sicilian/Italian-American."

Hence why I don't have a large amount of respect for a majority of journalists.

That's why we have phrases like: that's life, life's not fair, and you don't always get what you want.

I could care less if I get my way on the issue. I just see right through the whole "control the message." B.S.
