Entire Room Of Tea Party House Members Agrees With Rand Paul On Immigration | TPMDC

The "plan" is essentially this in a nutshell:

Work visas are gradually issued to illegals year by year, contingent on border security occuring at the same time. Only once an illegal earns the visa can they apply for citizenship, which is behind everybody else who has signed up already.

I'm a tea partier, and one whose said for ages that I'd be okay with trying to find a reasonable way to not ship out illegals that have otherwise not voilated our laws and are providing worth to our society, but that based on the lessons from 1980 I would refuse to take such steps until AFTER there is clear and unquestionable progress made for a fair bit of time on tangable worth while border security.

Allow for ways they can remain here legally, but not have a path to citizenship, in the interim IF they come forward. This way we can account for who is IN this country, where they are, what they're doing, etc and have them and businesses start to actually adhere to employment laws. Those who come forward during that time period as immigration laws are being reworked and the border is being secured would then be the ones eligable for any kind of means of working their way to some kind of citizenship status. Those who chose NOT to come forward during that time period would NOT have that option (so that they couldn't have tried to skirt the system for that extra amount of time to then try and jump up and go "Let me in!").

I think there's reasonable ways to deal with peoples issues on this problem in terms of those that are here, but my biggest issue is with the belief that those things (in terms of citizenship or significant legal status) should be happening first or at the same time as the overhaul to our laws and actions aimed at stopping illegal immigration. It shouldn't, it should come only AFTER it's clear that those things are in place and being executed.

The plan itself is good, but without specifics on how to speed up the current process all this will do is create a much larger backlog which is a major problem in the first place.

Kudos to Rand Paul on the idea, I do think its a thought process in the right direction though.

I don't know all the details, but this presumes, erroneously, that all illegals are in the country to work. I seriously doubt that 12 million plus illegals currently in the country are all working. Does a work visa get you one, two, a dozen, family members who are in the country illegally with you?

Why is it necessary for those who enter your country to work to become citizens, particularly when they enter your country illegally? Why not just give them a legal worker class designation and if they want to become citizens their time in the country illegally is irrelevant.

The easiest course of action is not always the wisest course of action.

One thing that is often lost in the discussion on illegal immigration is the human aspect. 12 million people are in the US illegally. These people are operating in a legal gray area ripe for abuse and sometimes connected with criminal activity. Should breaking the law be rewarded? Of course not. Yet there remains the reality that people have and will continue to cross the border without going through the proper channels. Solving the root of the problem is the only way to alleviate illegal immigration long-term, and that means economic investment in Mexico. Improving conditions to the point that there's no longer the incentive to risk death or imprisonment to leave their home country, I feel, is a more sustainable solution.
