enate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday he will not include a renewal of the federal assault weapons ban in a Senate gun control bill because it could not win even 40 votes on the Senate floo

“Right now her amendment using the most optimistic numbers has less than 40 votes," Reid told reporters on Tuesday. "That’s not 60. I have to get something on the floor so we can have votes on that issue and the other issues we talked about."
Reid indicated a proposal sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to expand background checks to cover private gun sales would not make it in the base bill, either.

“There are a couple different background check proposals floating around,” Reid said. “All these issues are important and I’m going to do what I can to make sure we have a fair, sound debate on this but we can’t have it unless I have something that I can put on the floor to proceed to it.

“I’m not going to try to put something on the floor that won’t succeed. I want something that will succeed,” he added.

Whatever, if anything, might come out of the Senate, it has no chance of being passed through the House...

Wait a minute, this looks like a compromise to me. We must rise up in revolt. It must be all or nothing, never give in!!!

Sorry, lost my mind there for a minute. I thought the end must be near. I am over it.;)

I really wish the focus could just stay on background checks, and strengthening the existing laws we have regarding gun accessability. There are plenty of laws and rules that can't be enforced because no one has been given the tools to enforce them. I hate adding more regulation to a problem that already has a mountain of inefficient regulation. Why not fix what's broken, instead of adding more things to be broken.

I believe Reid is planning on bringing up background checks as a separate bill later, and Feinstein will offer an amendment to limit magazine capacity as an amendment...

Not while the NRA owns the republican party. Sorry state of Washington for the children of AMerica.....so much for "pro-life".

Meh, lately, I'm not at all convinced it will happen. Still doesn't really address any of the current laws being impeded, and I don't hold out a lot of hope on that unfortunately.

Neither does anyone else, as it's predicted any attempt at such an amendment would garner less than 30 votes. I agree that if laws already on the books were enforced, it would be a much better road to follow...

WHY would people 'compromise' on this issue? If 6 people in this country caused car wrecks that killed people because they were talking on a cell phone or texting, would you accept a ban on cell phones? Would you think that even made sense for someone to propose? The fact is democrats are (by his own ADMISSION) rushing headlong to pass "SOMETHING!!! ANYTHING!!! We just gotta pass SOMETHING!!!" Why? To what end?

Adam Lanza killed his mother to take her licensed, background checked, registered firearms. He used a rifle and several handguns. He walked unhindered for 10 minutes freely shooting and reloading. Magazine capacity (which read admits wont pass) wouldnt have made a difference. Assault weapon bans (which Reid admits wont pass) wouldnt have made a difference. Using THAT incident to rush to pass moronic gun laws that are PROVEN to not work...well thats just plain stupid, isnt it? And you think people should 'compromise' for the sake of passing more stupid legislation? Not hard to guess which side of the fence you land on.

... Reid aborts and you magically turn "pro-life"... funny stuff.

No, Reid got sensible knowing the NRA owns the Republicans but there needs to be a START on common sense results from a mentally ill kid turning 20 children into chunks of meat.

The loons should withdraw from this issue completely. They look even more effeminate and silly than usual.

Between estrogen injections, you should read the OP. Reid couldn't even get the Democrats to support the provisions he took out.

It seems like the democrats really need to connect their messaging, with their actions. This would be a perfect opportunity to change the tone of the gun conversation to something productive and less ideological. Focus first on what will do the most good, with the most about public support. Watch their approval ratings rise, then take another shot at the AWB discussion.

I highly doubt an AWB could have made it through Congress on '09 or'10 when Dems had vast majorities in both chambers...

we both agree Reid did good by aborting the assault weapons ban.

excellent.

Always the pathetic stance of someone that has no argument...create a boogieman, blame the other side. Ignore the fact that a good number of democrats wont support it, not because they are 'owned' by the NRA but because unlike you they actually (hang on to your hat) LIKE firearms, own firearms, and wont hesitate to say **** you to you or anyone else that wants to ban them. This mindless childish NRA diatribe and eeeevil republicans thin is just idiotic. Have you bothered to gander at the number of self professed liberals and Democrats on THIS SITE that own firearms and arent keen to promote or accept bans? that recognize childish kneejerk legislative efforts are foolish, irresponsible, and wrong?

"Common sense" is to stop signing away our gun rights to the parasites in Washington DC whose armed private security is purchased at taxpayer expense.

Me too. I am just saying, if you want to argue the idea, I totally get that. Just don't base your entire argument around it. Do what works, and argue ideology after.

So all the Sturm und Drang by the boomstick lovers was uncalled for and nobody is going to take their boomsticks away.

Well, well. More conservative delusions and paranoia exposed, again.

Whatever they intend to pass, from either house, after the dust settles... if it impedes a persons ability to defend themselves....I am against it. More people die from being hit by a car driven by an idiot. Yet we don't see congress looking to outlaw cars.

Well why don't they start with minority crime in minority neighborhoods with hand guns where the lions share of gun crime is. Instead they try and pass useless laws that would have had no effect whatsoever on the most recent school shootings or anything else for that matter.

Just pass laws that would restrict the rights of law abiding citizens, hell that makes sense.

Bunch of scared ***** ass'es who don't know the first thing about firearms and what to pass laws that do nothing but make them feel less scared. That is until they realize the useless laws they just passed didn't do anything either.

You shamelessly stand on the corpses of children to pander propaganda

Disgusting

A compromise implies both sides are giving up something in order to get something in return. The only side giving up stuff is the pro-2nd amendment side. The anti-2nd amendment side has not given up anything.

I hope you are right. The anti-2nd amendment scum should not be given any more inches.
