British tourist jumps from hotel balcony in Agra to escape sexual assault | NDTV.com

A British tourist jumped from her hotel room in Agra today, allegedly to avoid being molested by the owner of the hotel.

The 30-year-old jumped from the balcony on the first floor of the Agra Mahal Hotel and is in hospital with head injuries; both her legs are fractured.

The hotel owner, Sachin Chauhan, has been arrested.

He allegedly entered the tourist's room early this morning, offering her a massage, and then tried to molest her.

The woman had checked into the hotel two days ago.

Just this morning, the UK had revised its advisory to its citizens travelling to India, saying women should be cautious. The advisory cited the recent gang-rape of a Swiss tourist by six men in Madhya Pradesh.

"A Swiss national suffered a serious sexual attack in Madhya Pradesh on March 16. Women travellers should exercise caution when travelling in India even if they are travelling in a group," the advisory said.

In Karnataka, five men have been arrested for harassing a Norwegian woman who was travelling on a bus. (Read: Five arrested for allegedly teasing Norwegian woman)

Well, we all know India is an uncivilized cess pool where you can't be safe. Many tourists go there, visit the country, dump a lot of money, and what do they get? A chance to get raped, assaulted, bullied, attacked...

The UK, and most civilized nation should take immediate steps to arming tourists to such places with the knowledge that such things can happen. And then encourage them to have some form of protection, stun gun, spray gun, anything that will help tourists not be assaulted on their holidays to such regions.

Yes, everything that is civilized is nicer. That is not up for debate, it is universal law.

It would be lovely if muslim immigrants in various places in Europe would start acting civilized too and stop being rapists. Sweden became the #1 rape capital of Europe in the past 20 years thanks to immigrants from the middle east and africa.
Brussels is a city where over 60 rapes, and 5 gang rapes occur on a monthly basis, most done by immigrants from the same places.

But it also happens in India and various places, and attention needs to be drawn to such cases in order to raise awareness.

Oh, I almost forgot, you're a master at not discussing the topic at hand.

I've got a brilliant idea..... How about people (especially women) get smart and stop visiting these places altogether?

Arming tourists isn't the answer, since I'm thinking India does customs checks and may confiscate such things. In fact, they might be considered contraband and could land someone in jail. Anyone who travels should take safety precautions, especially a woman traveling alone. When we're traveling in other countries, I think we want to believe they "operate" just like we do. That isn't the case, and we'd all be wise to keep that in mind when we travel outside the United States. But simple safety precautions can go a long way toward traveling smart.

Yeah, because nothing bad ever happens in the US.

I don't mean to be uncharitable, but just how does someone fracture both legs and have head injuries after jumping from a first floor balcony?

The smartest traveling precaution is often STAYING HOME. There are certain places that it's just not worth the hastle and potential threats to travel to. I'm not sure why it is that so many people don't see that.

Yes, but pepper sprays, stun guns and such should be made legal everywhere.

I don't know if they are legal in India, but if they aren't they should be made legal for personal protection. And people who go on vacation anywhere, on any continent Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Asia Minor or Oceania (not technically a continet, but w/e), should be advised to carry some form of protection, including that alarm thing that you posted.

The UK has an agency, like most countries, that monthly puts up a map of regions that are considered safe and unsafe to travel, based on rating system. Parts of India were considered safe, including where these events occurred, now they are thinking of changing the rating, and rightfully so.

Aggression towards tourists has been on the increase in India for the past years, especially tourists from Europe and the USA and it is having to deal with major social issues.

Yeah, because nothing bad ever happens in the US.

I'm not saying that at all eco. There are also many places inside the US that I won't/wouldn't travel to as well. In most cases, avoidance is the single best means of dealing with an issue. Especially safety issues.

I don't know, not a specialist. First floor doesn't mean ground floor, it means first floor. So I assume there is a distance of 4m or higher, at least.

I know for a fact that if you fall from more than 15m, you don't have to worry about fractures because the odds are you'll die. But under 15m, odds are you break something.

It's sad what happened. What's unfair is pretending bad stuff doesn't happen in all countries. Rape happens in civilized nations, too.

I think you're right. Tourist advisories often serve the purpose. Crime is everywhere, though. She's probably more likely to get raped in NY City, statistically speaking.

India rapes reported: 15,468 (1.2 billion population)
United States: 95,136 (313 million population)

And with all these odds stacked against me I have still evolved into a better, more civilized, well educated and more respectable individual than you have.

Cheers.

Fair enough - but people escape fires from second story windows all the time with little injury - I just found it curious - maybe the first floor balcony overlooks a cliff.

Again, I don't know. Can you state to an absolute certainty that people who fall from the first floor will be absolutely fine, no matter what?

Ofc it does. But it doesn't mean we shouldn't raise awareness or ignore when it happens elsewhere.
