WASHINGTON -- During an event at an African-American church in Paterson, N.J., Gov. Chris Christie used the word "boy" during a heated exchange with a man in the audience. The governor has a loose and colloquial style, and no history of racial animus in his past, but his remark and how it's been heard by the black community underscores the challenge Republicans face as the party begins its post-election outreach.

Here's the deal. It's not that Christie is racist. He isn't. It's not that he's stupid either. He isn't. Let me explain.

In the South, the term "boy" is derogatory, because a lot of white people used to use the term in that fashion when talking to black people. But there are a lot of white people in the North that don't see "boy" in that context. Being from Michigan, I used that word a lot, and of course, there was no intent there to use it in a derogatory way. It is used commonly all the time in the North. "Boy, is it hot out today". "Boy, the Detroit Tigers kicked ass today". "Boy, you better get your act together". Nothing racial in these statements. Of course, the North isn't the South either, but guess what? Christie is from the North. If he was from the South, then due to the history of the usage of the word "boy" there, we might be able to accuse him of something. But he isn't. His use of the word is strictly in a Northern context. In other words, the man is innocent.

Let me tell you what the real problem is here. Many on the left see Christie as an opponent who could give him trouble in 2016, so the mud slinging is starting early. I think Christie should have seen this coming, but now that he has seen it, he is going to really need to watch himself between now and the next election. Dirty politics is here again, but did it ever really go away? LOL.

I usually use bitch, not boy.

Seems just like a case of regional differences colliding.

And I thought everyone on the left was coddling Christie because he's a RINO.

I was born up north and I currently live in the south. I've never heard "boy" used in any kid of racial way. The vast majority of times (in a southern usage) "boy" is used by seniors and older men to describe guys below 40. Then again, I've never lived in the rural south.

"You can yell all you want about 'fix the public schools.' Yeah, I hear ya, boy, I hear ya. I hear what you're saying, but let me tell you something else. What I hear is the despair, I hear the despair of folks all over this state," Christie said at the event on Tuesday. Christie then went on to engage the man in an argument over the virtues of school choice.

That was a mistake. The ways you've illustrated its use? I use them all the time. But calling someone "boy" is different. Hopefully, it'll just disappear. But he never should have used the term. And in an African-American church yet!

I watched the video and I don't think Christie was calling the audience member boy, I think he used it in the same way someone would say boy it's hot out.

Great, huffpoo is at it again. In the method he used it he was using it more as an expletive rather than to refer top a person. You could substitute the F word, S word, or damn in there and it becomes clear. Oh, and that mistake comes from censorship of regular expletives which often causes someone to come up with stupid terms. He should have just dropped the F bomb and been done with it. but thank you huffpoo for another round of great reporting.

What i never realized was that the old show quantum leap was obviously a racist propaganda show. Every episode klan member Scott bakula said "oh boy." he was actually there to spread racism across the timeline.

It's been my experience that these people who scream "Racist!!!" at general terms are just old fogies who think it's still 1960.

This reminds me of the time Ross Perot used the term “You People,” while addressing the NAACP. The media pillared him for using a racist remark. But if one had listened to quite a few of his speeches he gave before different audiences, he used that term quite often. As in “You People can make a difference.” The thing here it wasn’t anyone in the audience at the NAACP who complained or said anything about it.

I think in this day and age people go looking for things to call someone or some party racist. Today, racist has become to mean someone who had a different political view or outlook from President Obama. I sincerely believe at times labeling someone a racist is done in hopes of shutting him up. To deny an opposite point of view.

There are way too many racist still in this country to attempt to change the definition from its true meaning to something meaning only a political difference.

As I've posted before, Christie is so unpredictable, so self-destructively off-the-cuff, disloyal and emotionally unstable he could not possibly withstand a national campaign. His antics make him endearing to some - who only see a snippet every couple of months. But if for any length of time he becomes recognized as a baffoon.

I don't think there is a chance in the world that Christie would intentionally call a black man "Boy" in front of an audience and a camera, or even in private.

On the other hand, even using the word "Boy" in a questionable context with blacks present is quite a mistake for a politician to make. Most politicians don't use the word "Boy" at all around blacks. Mistakes like this will sink Christie.

Interesting to note off topic that it now seems to have become acceptable for blacks to refer to young white males as "White Boy." Just not the other way around.

Boy, I tell you what...people need to grow the **** up and grow a set. With all the poverty, violence, and devastation in the world to make this kind of a thing an issue is a joke.

Well, on the plus side, the left will stop holding Christie up as to what their ideal republican looks like......

I don't think Christie is a racist, and I don't think his comment was meant to be derogatory. I think it was an example of what is known as "code switching"

When some people talk to other people who come from a different social group, they will adopt the speech habits of that group. I think Christie was just trying to get a little "jive" on, which is not a good idea for someone as white as he is, and definitely not at a black church

Nah, you got it wrong. Its the PC Nazi retards as well as the race merchants.

There's nothing racial in Cristie's response. And people making an issue of this are sad little lemmings just goosestepping along with the rest of the faux outraged. This really has gotten unbearably stupid.

I think it's a far bigger issue that Chris Christie is going around calling grown ass men 'boys'.

Boy you got that right.

The context makes it seem more expletive rather than actually addressing the person. But the right wing showed us they don't care about context with "you didn't build that," and they're already up in arms because Christie dared give a Democrat some credit for his work during a major disaster.

They'll see it as reason enough to toss him.

Seriously, people need to grow the hell up. It's a word! Get over it!

I haven't seen it linked to racist comments either. Many times it is used as a warning of impending retaliation or to mark inexperience or ignorance of a subject. But I've seen it used across the board. I don't like Christie, but this was not an act of racism.

Blacks call eachother "nigger" , I'm so not concerned with "boy".

Another example of why Christie would be a DISASTER as the Republican candidate for president - his unpredictable off-the-cuff mouth.

The most racist people are the ones who will make every excuse to see racism in others.

This is par for the course.

I won't cast judgement on him until I read the exact quote.
