Except the fine is nowhere close to the cost of health insurance.

    Less than $9,500 income = $0
    $9,500 - $37,000 income = $695
    $50,000 income = $1,000
    $75,000 income = $1,600
    $100,000 income = $2,250
    $125,000 income = $2,900
    $150,000 income = $3,500
    $175,000 income = $4,100
    $200,000 income = $4,700
Over $200,000 = The cost of a "bronze" health-insurance plan

That is true now (initially) yet things can be "adjusted" to change that. You are comparing the price of an exchange policy without the subsidy, so if a person made 250% of the poverty level then their fine would be about $500, or about 20% of what their out of pocket insurance premium cost would be (about $2,300 per year). So that person can pay a $42/month fine and get no insurance or pay $192/month and get insurance with an annual maximum out of pocket cost of about $3,000. Are they 2/3 of the way there just for premiums? That is unclear to me. I would expect the PPACA "no insurance fines" (taxes?) to rise (very soon) to force more of the young healthy folks into the subsidized "risk pool".

    Hey Polgara.

Well, I'm in luck. Two years ago my husband retired and got some chickens for a hobby. We haven't had to barter any - YET!

Our tax burden which covers healthcare is much lower than the average Americans health insurance costs though.
In the UK, a worker on an average wage will pay £757 tax per year (2005 figures) towards the NHS. Everyone has 'full coverage', no deductables, etc.

That is not what he says, he says even though he received a raise he has much less disposable income now. The same thing our Canadian associates say.
