Looks like the "republicans" are, indeed for smaller government.

House government funding bill seeks to soften blow from sequester - The Hill's On The Money

Republican appropriators on Monday introduced a $984 billion government-funding bill that takes several steps to cushion the Pentagon and other agencies from the blow of $85 billion in sequester spending cuts.

It would shift about $10.4 billion into the Pentagon’s operations and maintenance account by cutting other defense accounts, including a $3.6 billion reduction in personnel funds, $2.5 billion less in research and development, and $4.2 billion less in equipment procurement.

The change would give the Pentagon more flexibility to put money into operations accounts that were facing a shortfall this year and were threatened by a full-year continuing resolution, including training programs, weapons maintenance, civilian personnel and military healthcare.“The key is they are moving the money into the accounts where it’s needed, so that DOD will not have to make as drastic as reductions in things like readiness,” Todd Harrison, a budget analyst at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, said. “This helps alleviate the problem, but it’s also important to note it does not fully alleviate the problem [due to sequestration].”

What seems to be the problem?

They aren't adding spending are they?

Madman is mad because the Republicans wanted to give Obama the authority to make such value judgements on cuts and he threatened to veto such a bill because the poor man would actually have to be President and it would cut into his golf time so now Republicans are going to take that initiative on themselves.

Reading comprehension problems? Military contractors are taking a knock here. Who do you think does military R&D? Franky, I'm for the approach across the the whole Fed as Senator Mikulski is proposing. Keep the cuts, allow various agencies to manage them properly without budget gimmicks.

Makes sense to me, no spending increase, just letting DOD put the money where it is needed the most. Do you see something wrong with this?
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

Re: House government funding bill seeks to soften blow from sequester

    I'm confused here...

Is the bill giving the defense department more money, thus increasing spending? Or is it just loosening the restriction on how it can use the money it's already allocated?

If it's the latter, good on the Republicans and they should be looking to do that across the board. We need to make large cuts (which we're NOT making), but we should go out of our way to do them in a way that has the least amount of impact possible in terms of the actual necessary operations of an agency/department.

What part of the sequester needs to be "softened?"

Obama proved what a liar he was, when he went all "Chicken Little" about the sequester. Here we are a week in, and the "blow" from the sequester is no more than a feather landing on a block of granite.

The part that needs to be softened is that the DoD needs to be left to manage their money the way they need to, not the way the sequester is forcing it to happen.

The amount in cuts are fine, but instead of using a axe, a scapel needs to be used for DoD. I'm not going to sit here and play the blame game, because frankly ALL sides have had their chance to fix this and have blown it.
