It is pretty goofy to be upset about being wrongly called 'Indians' and then substitute that with "Native American" yet another benevolent gifting of title by an early explorer NOT 'native' to this land.
Columbus got lost. He managed to stave off a mutiny. He luckily found the Virgin Islands. Indians are what people from India are called. I interact with a lot more people from India than from a reservation. I don't think it's good when describing an Indian as either the "Woo-woo" (patting hand over mouth) or the the other Indians (points finger to forehead). Native Americans are not from India. They are not Asian. It's not even the same hemisphere. Hell, if it's about the first guy thinking this was India, shouldn't the continents be called North and South India? Why aren't we the United States of Columbia?

We can't go back a little farther and recognize that they emigrated from Asia via the land bridge? If it is true that "Native Americans" aren't actually native at all, but rather an arbitrary designation, then what's the point of even making a big deal out of it?
If you claim sexual harassment to be wrong, yet you defend anyone on your side for any reason,
then you are a hypocrite and everything you say on the matter is just babble.

all true. However...when you have gone by the name Indian for 500 years and embraced that label (regardless of origin) the. It is kind of stupid to suggest they should rush to embrace an equally Eurocentric label with the nod that they are at least 'natives'.

As we learned with Ward Churchill, all that really matters is if you dog gone it FEEL like an Indian.

My paternal ancestry came here in 1887 from Denmark. With the exception of a Prussian line a few hundred years before that that's pretty much where they all came from. My maternal lineage is a bit more diverse with a fair amount of Scottish, a few black folk and a great great grandmother hat was tribal from the Carolina's. my kids asked me what we are...and what can I say? We are 6th generation Native American. Anything other than that as a descriptor is just silly. We are Scottish. We aren't Danish. We aren't Indians. We are native Americans. Done and done.

Im not joking. I actually want to go start a new-age tribe. :p But it would end up with me just being a hermit trying to learn the ways as no one would follow.

I think there are groups that tried it, primarily because they wanted to legally use peyote.
