According to a background briefer provided by the White House, President Barack Obama is asking doctors to help deal with guns. Here's the relevant passage:

PRESERVE THE RIGHTS OF HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS TO PROTECT THEIR PATIENTS AND COMMUNITIES FROM GUN VIOLENCE: We should never ask doctors and other health care providers to turn a blind eye to the risks posed by guns in the wrong hands.

Clarify that no federal law prevents health care providers from warning law enforcement authorities about threats of violence: Doctors and other mental health professionals play an important role in protecting the safety of their patients and the broader community by reporting direct and credible threats of violence to the authorities. But there is public confusion about whether federal law prohibits such reports about threats of violence. The Department of Health and Human Services is issuing a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits these reports in any way.

Protect the rights of health care providers to talk to their patients about gun safety: Doctors and other health care providers also need to be able to ask about firearms in their patients’ homes and safe storage of those firearms, especially if their patients show signs of certain mental illnesses or if they have a young child or mentally ill family member at home. Some have incorrectly claimed that language in the Affordable Care Act prohibits doctors from asking their patients about guns and gun safety. Medical groups also continue to fight against state laws attempting to ban doctors from asking these questions. The Administration will issue guidance clarifying that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit or otherwise regulate communication between doctors and patients, including about firearms.

Obama Asks Doctors to Help Deal With Guns | The Weekly Standard

MD's are now law enforcement.

I can't wait until our medical records are public... of course... for the good of the nation.

So you think that a doctor who is treating a mentally unstable patient shouldn't ask the question "do you have guns in your home?"?

Do you think that if a mentally unstable person tells their doctor that they have recurring thoughts of going to shoot up a school with their rifle, that they doctor shouldn't be allowed to warn authorities?

only idiots want 100% patient privacy.

Ha! Obama's alternate universe.

The doctors that I've picked out just by random chance, all seem to be armed to the teeth. And they have the money to buy the most expensive guns available.

Have to wonder if Obama actually think Doctors like and respect him.

The problem with allowing these sorts of questions isn't so much about Adults as it is about Children. If my doctor asks me that question he's going to get one answer "**** You!!!" and I'll be out of there just as quick as I can get my clothes back on. HOWEVER, since my understanding is that these pediatricians have a part of their exams these days where they ask the parent to step out of the room and ask the child several questions, this could be a problem. In fact it was for a friend of mine and fellow shooter....

Their pediatrician asked his 11 year old daughter that question during one of these exams. She answered honestly. When he returned to the room, the doctor proceeded to start trying to pawn off a bunch of pamphlets on the dangers of gun ownership. Suffice it to say that no members of his family see anyone from that doctor's office anymore and that he was apparently quite vocal about it on their way out the door.

And I bet all of those doctors, if they were treating a mentally unstable patient, such as Adam Lanza, would appreciate the opportunity to ask about gun ownership, and to possibly warn police of signs that the patient is planning to use those guns on innocent victims, don't ya think?

An incredibly naive viewpoint. The business of medical doctors is practicing medicine and making money, not interrogating patients regarding their personal property and then ratting them out to the government. NOBODY would go to a doctor who tried that.

Review Terrasova v Board of Regents in California and you will see that law already exists for psychiatric providers IF the patient has indicated an intention to harm someone else, but not based on his possessions, which are none of the government's business.

Of course, why on earth would a doctor care if their mentally unstable patient had guns at home, lol.

Yes it's their personal property. That doesn't mean it can't be asked about. Don't you think a doctor would ask about your house if you came in with lead poisoning and he though that old lead paint could be the culprit? ****, last time I was at the doctor for an ingrown nail he made sure to ask me about my shoes, which are my personal property.

It's called a society. If you don't like living in one, move to the woods and rub aloe vera on you when you're sick or hurt. But don't make the rest of us live in a backwards ass country just because can't understand why mentally unstable people having guns could be an important issue.

Just pointing out that Drs have never been prohibited from asking about a patient's firearms. It's the status quo, not a change.

If you'd like a discussion on gun control, please try to find a site that isn't such a right wing pundit rag.

Could someone please answer this? WTF does a doctor need to inquire or lecture me on gun safety? I want a doctor to be an expert in diagnosing and treating illness, not firearms! If I want a firearms safety course, I'll take one from someone trained in that field! Feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.

Whats next, the dentist required to "advise" me about Climate Change?

Already been asked this question by a doc. My answer was "I decline to answer". He moved on to the next question without a blink. That will continue to be my policy.

They have a duty to report people that are 'unstable' and could cause harm to themselves and/or others. That's it. Doesn't matter if they have crossbows at home or anything.

Healthcare is HEALTHcare, physical and mental. It has nothing to do with doctors asking about weapons at the persons home. And no emotional rant from the left can change that reality.

You seem to be like the ant who's brain has been taken over by the Lancet Fluke.

You did notice there was only ONE LINE from the Weekly Standard??? Introducing relevant passages. The remainder were direct quotes.

I know... you cannot handle the truth. That's why you're a card carrying Parasite Nation member.

You see... Parasite Nation has a little deeper meaning than simply being parasitic members of society, voting for those who are conduits to class warfare and the ensuing theft and redistribution that poisoned platform promotes... it also has to do with the Lancet Fluke mentality of Parasite Nation members such as you.

I once was a full fledged Lefty... the difference is I kept an open mind... was not a mind numbed robot who had his mind commandeered over by the Parasite Nation's version of Lancet Fluke.

As you were... up the grass, down the grass, up the grass, down the grass...

Was this before or after Obama told us his plan today? I smell a fairy tale.

When did your Dr. ask you this. Was it today?

No, its been two-three years, and I think it was a nurse filling out a questionaire now that I think about it.

Then it had nothing to do with what Obama said today. It was something that was already in place. So why are you so upset today about something that happened two or three years ago by a nurse and not a Dr. Makes no since.

Why should a Dr. ask a mentally sane person about their guns just because they have a kid?

Some doctors seem to be working with the government already.

IIRC the Department of Motor Vehicles does it all the time.

Where did you get that from?

From the OP...

my Doc asks me about firearms all the time.
why on our last visit ,he was asking what he could do to make better cold bore shots.
turns out cold bore wasn't his problem... clean bore was.
told him to foul his rifle the day before the hunt and he'd be fine.

the time before that, we spoke about optics.. he prefers Nikon over Leupold... he's stupid like that.
I gave him an old Swarovski i've had laying around , now all of a sudden he's a glass snob.

I don't think he's going to be very useful to Obama...

That is not what this is about. Or is Goshin mentally unstable?
This is Obama and his Socialists Little Gun Gestapo.

That's such a big mistake many people make in long range shooting. Always swab your barrel the exact same number of times, and never more than 3 or 4 times. Too clean of a barrel is going to throw off your first shot, sometimes rather dramatically.

Can we get a list of Muddy Creek approved news sources? We wouldn't want you excluding yourself from the conversation.
