Journal News gun permit map used by burglars to target White Plains home

If this is true its very bad news.

A White Plains residence pinpointed on a controversial handgun permit database was burglarized Saturday, and the burglars' target was the homeowner's gun safe.
At least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday but were unsuccessful in an attempt to open the safe, which contained legally owned weapons, according to a law enforcement source. One suspect was taken into custody, the source said.
The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues.

I still consider it an IF, but defend the right of the paper to publish anything in the public record. If you do not want it in the public record, change the law or do not apply for a permit.

I just think that whatever the newspapers goal was in their mind...it may very well backfire. If their printing is the reason guns are stolen by nefarious individuals...I dont see how they get a pass on that from everyone...just because its journalistic privledge or whatever you call it.

Where this gets sticky, is that many of the permit holders are Police.
Should it really be ok to publish the names and address of Police Officers?
I propose that the same right the paper has to publish whatever it wants, should also apply to the gun owners.
The gun owners should not be singled out, because they choose to exercise their rights.

I respect your position. If I lived there, I would cancel my paper and never advertise with them. Unfortunately, I cannot always agree with how other people exercise their rights, but I can defend them having the right.

There ya go..hit them where it hurts right in the pocket...that always gets their attention....Look I fully understand the freedom the press must have...but with all the freedom of the press they enjoy, wouldnt you agree there is also responsiblity and invisible lines that they should not cross ? I do..and if they cross them and it causes harm they need to pay a price for that.

I want to be able to say no, but I simply cannot. Just because someone pushes the envelope of common decency does not mean that they should be legally punished. People should cancel their subscriptions/cancel their ads/boycott those who advertise with them as an expression of their rights though. I wouldn't be against changing the laws regarding the public nature of the permit info, but for so long as the laws make it a public document, the paper unfortunately to some have the right to cull those docs.

We always hear that "guns don't kill people", so shouldn't we be hearing "newspapers don't commit burglaries".

I think it is a pretty rude thing they are doing to be sure. I am not where the line can be drawn though in law. Just letting public sentiment work itself out is about the best we can do unfortunately.
