Suicides in the U.S. military surged to a record 349 last year, far exceeding American combat deaths in Afghanistan, and some private experts are predicting the dark trend will worsen this year.
The Pentagon has struggled to deal with the suicides, which Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and others have called an epidemic. The problem reflects severe strains on military personnel burdened with more than a decade of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, complicated by anxiety over the prospect of being forced out of a shrinking force.

David Rudd, a military suicide researcher and dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Utah, said he sees two main categories of troops who are committing suicide at an accelerating pace: Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffering from depression, post-traumatic stress or substance abuse, and those who have not gone to war but face troubled personal relationships, money problems or legal woes.

He is not optimistic about a decline soon.

We have a serious problem with suicides in the military. Something needs to be done about this. I also believe this is a unfortunate result of war and military actions.

What a surprise, as it turns out, you can push human beings too far. We ask these soldiers to do 4 or 5 deployments, then expect them to be mentally sane. Hell, one deployment screwed me up enough.

I feel their pain... If Obama was my boss... I might think about ending it all too...

funny that they expect us to go over and do things that, in many cases, are outside the realm of human decency and then act surprised that so many of us can't just come home and forget about it and go back to business as usual. and the 'suicide prevention' training they give you is a freakin joke.

it's been nearly 3 years since my last deployment and i still jump at loud noises, feel uncomfortable in crowds, wake up in the middle of the night any time the wind blows or a dog barks, etc.

Were you aware of who the Commander in Chief is?

You started the thread, who exactly were you intending to blame?
