Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service – to their old cronies in the burglary trade.
The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.

I absolutely agree that it was totally assinine to do what they did...first of all...professional burglars LOVE GUNS they can sell guns on the street like candy to babies and make BIG money off them...Professional burglars do not indescriminately run around breaking into buildings and homes...they can spend weeks watching and planning and observing before they make a move...they do not make a move unless they believe its relatively safe, low risk for capture and profitable.
They dont care if you have guns in your house...they arent going in your house until your not there...so this map just assists everyone with that mindset.

the newspaper's decision to publish that map was exceptionally irresponsible.

Key words: Professional burglars. The amateur street thug isn't thinking that far ahead. Best to be armed for either situation.

I think most criminals pick their burglary targets because they have either seen something in the house from the street or because they have heard through the grapevine that the house has some good crap in it or because it is in a nice neighborhood and they have cased the joint figuring out their options.

This is why it's always funny to me when gun nuts post the following sign as a counterargument to gun control:

Burglars, especially professionals, WANT to find guns in your home so if you put that sign on your lawn, they are going to case your house and steal them when you're gone. People are so stupid. And yeah, the newspaper should not have posted that list of homes - incredibly stupid, at the least.

Newspaper: Here's a list of law-abiding citizens who, most likely, will never ever bother you or anybody else

Not the newspaper's intent, I'm sure, but the end result nonetheless. Did the newspaper publish the names and addresses of criminal illegal gun owners? You know, the people who are actually likely to use their guns in the commission of a crime? No, they didn't.

What was the newspaper's intent, again?

I think in the coming days, privacy rights will again be tested in the courts.

This was all already publicly available information, correct?

.... In my younger days, I was a California born and certified hoodlum. I didn't really pick up newspapers. I doubt things have changed in 10 years.

Most burglars pick thier target based on

1) NO one being home
2) No security system
3) NO dog
4) Entry point to house is not visible from the street or poorly lit
