Florida's Long Lines On Election Day Discouraged 49,000 People From Voting: Report

ut a new study shows that tens of thousands of people were actually discouraged from voting because of the long lines.According to an analysis by Theodore Allen, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Ohio State University, as many as 49,000 individuals in Central Florida did not vote because of the problems at the polls.
About 19,000 of those people would have backed former GOP nominee Mitt Romney, while the rest would have gone for President Barack Obama, according to Allen.
The Orlando Sentinel, which published the results of Allen's research, notes that those findings suggest "that Obama's margin over Romney in Florida could have been roughly 11,000 votes higher than it was, based just on Central Florida results. Obama carried the state by 74,309 votes out of more than 8.4 million cast."

Or maybe, just maybe the voters should consider signing up for an early ballot and vote by mail. I have not stood in line to vote for years (local, State or National). Pretty easy way to avoid long lines.

That said, yes all States need to find a way to accomidate those who want to vote in person.

the long lines were an absolute disgrace, and Florida is begging for a federal intervention. considering that election day isn't a holiday and that many people are paid by the hour, long lines amount to an effective poll tax. reading about six to eight hour waits really made me angry.

People in Iraq voted while under threat of getting their asses blown up...and people in Florida whined about long lines.

    Cry me a river.

Luckily the United States can hold itself to a higher standard than Iraq.

Yep, and I guarded some of those people while they did it. You wouldn't believe how happy they were just for the opportunity to vote. Americans are spoiled.

Whenever a topic like this comes up, I find myself wondering how many people who espouse the above sentiments also espouse the following:

    1. America is the greatest nation on Earth.
    2. America is a beacon of freedom to the oppressed peoples of the Earth.
    3. The Supreme Court shouldn't take into account the decisions of foreign courts when looking for precedents upon which to base their decisions.

The fact is, a lot of Americans are working crap jobs for asshole bosses and making **** wages, living paycheck to paycheck. A long line is going to discourage them from voting.

Are there other options? Of course. Do we do a good job of making sure people are aware of them and encouraging them to do so? I'd say this is proof that we don't.

It never ceases to amaze me that, despite our largesse, technology and know-how, we continue to struggle when it comes time to cast a ballot or take a census.
I'm already gearing up for Finger Vote 2014.

Just for reference, means my post was a giant steaming pile of sarcasm.

The fact of the matter is this. If a person wants to vote, there are many opportunities to do so. Show me a person that says they didn't have the opportunity to vote and I'll show you someone who really didn't care about voting to begin with. If a Marine in combat has the time to cast an absentee ballot, everyone has the time.
