Washington State Pushes Electric Cars, Then Taxes Owners

This is kind of funny in a way and a perfect example of how our liberal government works, first they give you a tax break to encourage you to "do the right thing" then they tax you extra because you did "the right thing". They will get their ounce of blood you can be sure of that.

"Washington State has found a way to make up for revenue lost from owners of electric cars: everyone who took advantage of the thousands of dollars in federal and state incentives to purchase a gas-free vehicle will now be charged a $100 annual fee."

I don't know if those individuals were duped....they drive on roads...therefore they should be paying to maintain those roads.

Based on the source article individuals with non-electric cars pay on average 200 dollars in gas tax.

Would this be the same liberal crew that taxes our wages to support out of wedlock childbirth to HS dropouts as an investment in our future? The same logic that says taxation of income, based upon how that income was not spent, is Constitutional, could easily justify an alternate road use taxation scheme, not enirely based on the amount of motor fuel used. I share your "shock" at how moronic gov't logic is, but they will always justify their actions as "for the common good" no matter how little common sense is involved. Vote for morons, live with their decisions, that is the American way.

Maybe not duped but your initial 1000k tax credit evaporates in 10 years with the new tax. On second thought duped may be the right word.

We are always told that these car/truck motor fuel taxes "support our roadways" but that is far from true, since a good bit of that is siphoned off for supporting urban "public transit" at huge discounts for the city folks, while shifting the costs to the suburban/country folks.

So you believe that if you buy an electric car you no longer have an obligation to provide revenue to fund the roads you drive on?

it's still too soon. let more people choose electric before taxing it. we stand to gain a lot more money long term by beginning a stepwise transition from oil as soon as possible. we also should start expanding our grid.

Oh no....10 years! Duped? L2math. If the average gas car pays more than 100 bucks/year in gas taxes (and from the source article "Washington's gas tax stands at 37.5 cents per gallon, and is the state's largest source of transportation dollars. It costs the average motorist, driving roughly 12,000 miles in a vehicle that gets 23 mpg, about $200 a year."); they're still coming out ahead of the game. So they still save about 100 bucks per year on tax, and in 10 years (assuming the same tax rate, which of course wouldn't be the case), they'd save 1000 dollars.

Better that oil? Depends on the generating source; energy doesn't make itself you know.

I believe offering you a 1000 buck tax break without at the same time informing the buyer he will be taxed a 100 bucks a year is deceitful and is typical socialism, give with one hand while taking with the other.
