Well, Obama is President now, so we won't have any more problems with human rights abuses, right?

Or, at least, Democrats and liberals won't complain about them as much.

If you want a news media that cares about civil rights and a vigorous human rights community that keeps a sharp eye out for abuses by the Administration, then you'll just have to elect a Republican for President!

I'm assuming those cases can be linked to Bush. If they concerned Obama they would not have been brought up, I suspect.

Democrats get a pass on torture, wrongful imprisonment, kidnapping, etc., because they care.

Macedonia and with the USA's CIA were condemned by the European Court of Human Rights. It was a landmark case that condemned various US practices on treatment and unlawful holding of prisoners. I support this finding and findings, if the US want to be viewed more highly throughout the world these kind of practices need to stop.
Well I'm pretty sure we haven't really been on the high moral road on this one.

Right. Check Europe's history of human rights abuses on foreign soil.

Also, Khaled El-Masri is a Middle Eastern name.

To be fair, they've done worse.
I love the NSA. It's like having a secret fan-base you will never see, but they're there, watching everything you write and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that I may be some person's only form of unconstitutional entertainment one night.

    No, actually. The UK.

BBC News - UK pays 2.2m to settle Libyan rendition claim

The UK government has agreed to pay 2.2m ($3.5m) to a Libyan dissident and his family who say MI6 was involved in their illegal rendition.

Sami al-Saadi and his family were forcibly transferred to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's Libya in 2004.

Their lawyers say the pay-out ends the family's legal action against the UK, in which they were arguing MI6 was instrumental in their kidnap.

The UK still faces a further allegation of rendition from another Libyan.

I think the practice of redition is dispicable, and all countries that have used the practice should be equally villified for doing so. Redition has no place in civilized society, and should be internationally censured.

The story itself lacks a lot of detail as to the facts surrounding this case. I am always suspicious of such claims and rulings due to there being so many anti-american entities in europe just scratching at every itch they can to smear the US. Until there is some type of legitimate fact finding investigation, I don't feel there is any reason to be alarmed. It is well known that the CIA is involved these types of things. However, there is virtually no country on the planet that does not have some type of underground entity pulling the geopolitical strings. To say otherwise, is to simply be dishonest or even worst, just naieve about how countries do their business. The only reason the US gets highlighted as often as it does is because by being designated the "world police", we effectivly paint a target on our own backs for criticism. Many people simply do not understand or are just ignorant to this and combined with ignorance of how the world works, they feel the US is evil. When in fact, the US is probably benign in comparison to other countries that just dont have the spotlight on them all the time like we do.

    - Idealistically, everything should work as you planed it to. Realistically, it depends on how idealistic you are as to the measure of success.
